Advertised Summary Job Description: The Division of Nephrology seeks a Technician B to assist in executing the aims of funded grants and contracts. The work performed will support genetic investigations of kidney diseases in humans and animal models. The research will have direct relevance to clinical medicine, particularly to the pathophysiology of renal disease in humans. It is expected that this position will provide substantial experience for individuals interested in a career in medicine or biomedical research. In the long term, this position is expected to provide the technician with substantial experience in state-of-the-art approaches in molecular genetics.
The primary function of this technician will be conducting standard molecular, genetic and immunological analysis experiments designed to resolve the genetic basis of kidney disease in human and murine models. These will involve preparation of genomic DNA from human blood or mouse tissue for genotyping. Other experiments may include expression studies using Northern analysis, protein gels with Western blotting and quantitative PCR analyses, ELISA, flow cytometry as well as experiments requiring cell culture. The technician will also analyze DNA and RNA sequence data, and will gain exposure to analysis and validation of Next-Gen sequencing data.
The technician will also be responsible for animal husbandry tasks associated with the genetic studies. The technician will be responsible for setting up matings, weaning pups, tail biopsy, euthanasia and observations on all animals for the development of phenotypes. The technician will be responsible for data entry and handling all paper work required for the animal facility. Perform additional related duties as assigned.
General Minimum Qualifications: Requires a bachelor's degree in biology or related science or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
The candidate selected for this position is required to undergo a drug screening test prior to a final offer of employment being made.
Additional Specific Minimum Qualifications: At least 3 months previous laboratory experience required preferably with some training either in molecular biological techniques or previous experience handling rodents in the laboratory setting. Must be a team player and be willing to work with human blood, mouse tissue and radionucleotides.
Preferred Qualifications: Computer skills, especially with Macintosh and Windows computers, will be helpful.
