The Division of Chemical and Biological Sciences at Ames Laboratory, a Department of Energy National Laboratory affiliated with Iowa State University, is searching for a qualified Postdoctoral Research Associate.
This position will conduct research that is focused on the development of novel theoretical methods in electronic structure theory, especially coupled cluster theory, and the development of associated algorithms that are designed to take optimal advantage of current pre-exascale and anticipated exascale heterogeneous computer systems. Responsibilities for this position include the application of advanced computer science concepts and practices to existing and future application codes in materials science and related fields to improve their scalability and tailor their performance and portability for pre-exascale and exascale architectures. This position will mentor students working in the research group. In collaboration with senior scientific staff, the position will co-author papers, presentations, reports, proposals, and technical manuals in order to efficiently disseminate research results and obtain new funding.
The successful candidate will possess a demonstrated ability for developing very accurate electronic structure methods and transitioning these accurate methods into highly scalable software, in order to accomplish computational simulations in materials science and related fields. In addition, strong communication skills will expedite the process of successfully encouraging others to use the resulting software and interfaces, and to convince the funding agency of the long-term, broad-based appeal of the developed software. The candidate will have the ability to work on substantial independent theory and programming projects and possess solid interpersonal skills to effectively interact with other scientists, graduate students, and undergraduate students.
Required Education and Experience:
PhD in the development of new methods in theoretical quantum chemistry, particularly coupled cluster methods
At least five years of previous postdoc experience or equivalent experience beyond the PhD
Extensive experience developing quantum chemistry software with Python, C++, and Fortran
Experience with GAMESS
Preferred Education and Experience:
Experience developing new coupled cluster methods for heterogeneous computer systems, especially including graphical processing units (GPUs)
Experience with additional electronic structure codes
