The Princeton Alumni Weekly, Princeton University’s editorially independent alumni magazine, seeks a writer to cover campus news for our print edition and digital and social-media offerings. The writer will conduct interviews in person and on the telephone and report on lectures, student activities, faculty meetings, CPUC meetings, and other University events and developments. She/he will interact with a wide range of people, including students and University officials at the highest levels. The writer will develop and execute ideas for campus-related feature articles and will contribute to other sections of the magazine as time permits.
Report on and write about campus news: Develop story ideas; gather facts; conduct interviews in person and by telephone; attend campus meetings and events; suggest art elements; craft interesting, clear news articles and campus-related feature stories.
Assign and edit the “Behind the Research” full-page report on faculty research, which runs in PAW’s Life of the Mind section. In this role, the staff member will develop relationships with faculty members; assign coverage to PAW freelancers; edit the submitted articles; write headlines, subheads, and cutlines; and collaborate with the art director on images. This page consists of an introduction (usually three paragraphs) about the faculty researcher and short reports on three of the researcher’s recent studies.
As time permits: Contribute additional material to other sections of PAW, PAW Online, PAW’s social-media offerings, and the annual Reunions Guide.
At least 2 years of experience in journalism (including college experience). Writing samples are required.
Demonstrated ability to conduct interviews and to write clearly, quickly, and concisely
Demonstrated computer-research skills
Strong interpersonal skills, professional manner, and comfort interacting with a wide range of people.
Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel
Familiarity with editing conventions, journalism ethics, and AP style
Ability to work under intense deadline pressure and as part of a small, tight-knit team
Knowledge of Princeton University or experience in higher education
Experience in social media (including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram), digital communication
Able to use InDesign
Basic knowledge of photography
Familiarity with layout, graphic design
Experience in multimedia storytelling
Selected candidates will be required to provide writing samples.
