Genomics Resource Center Laboratory Research Assistant - (190000FT)
The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS) is currently seeking a Research Assistant within the Genomics Resource Center (GRC) . Comprised of an inter-disciplinary, multi-department team of investigators, IGS uses the powerful tools of genomics and bioinformatics to understand genome function in health and disease, to study molecular and cellular networks in a variety of model systems, and to generate data and bioinformatics resources of value to the international scientific community.
The GRC is a high-throughput core laboratory and data analysis group supporting the scientific programs of IGS and its collaborators utilizing state-of-the-art technology to generate high quality genomic data in a cost effective manner. Laboratory services offered include but are not limited to custom protocol development, sample preparation, library construction, and DNA and RNA sequencing using multiple sequencing technologies. The GRC and Institute for Genome Sciences continuously develop and expand genomic technologies to remain a cutting-edge resource center.
Under the general supervision of the laboratory supervisor, the successful candidate is expected to independently perform routine experiments in a research laboratory both successfully and efficiently, maintain a high level of organization, contribute to general maintenance of the laboratory, equipment and supplies, operate computers for data entry, and maintain accurate records.

Performs routine laboratory maintenance and research activities such as: general housekeeping, preparing and validating reagents; evaluating and preparing nucleic acid samples; and executing biochemical and molecular biology procedures such as purifying DNA/RNA from cell cultures & clinical specimens, constructing DNA fragment libraries, performing PCR, gel electrophoresis, and sequencing DNA.
Utilizing the GRC Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), maintain accurate and detailed records of experiments and procedures, validate results, and record all laboratory activities.
May perform advanced laboratory research activities such as: developing and evaluating new recombinant DNA techniques, sequencing methods, and customized molecular assays. May assist in the design of research studies.
Compiles and may analyze research data using various relevant computer software applications. · Assists with literature research, editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer graphics for publication.
May perform administrative duties such as: training and guiding students and/or other laboratory technicians; assisting in developing policies, procedures and/or methods for laboratory experimentation, and ordering supplies.
Education: Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or field of study related to the research of the laboratory.
Preferred: Experience operating basic molecular biology laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, spectrophotometers, thermocyclers, and electrophoresis equipment, and experience with the Illumina sequencing platforms.
May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.
* Bachelor's degree in an unrelated field with at least 18 credits in a field related to the research of the clinic or laboratory, as appropriate, or Bachelor's degree in unrelated field with at least one year of experience in a field directly related to the research of the clinic or laboratory, as appropriate. Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
