GSPH-Environmental/Occupational Health - Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh - (19002909)
The research laboratory of Dr. Berthony Deslouches is seeking two Research Specialists, level II (for two different research projects), who are highly enthusiastic about conducting research in infectious disease treatment or environmental exposure-related disease.
The applicants must be eager to learn the techniques necessary to become proficient in generating high-impact publishable data. Hence, training will be provided in environmental exposure research, microbiology, cell culture, nucleotide extractions, gel electrophoresis, immunostaining (IF and IHC), high-resolution imaging, and surface plasmon resonance as well as small animal handling. Specifically, a significant aspect of the applicants' duty is to work with small animals such as mice (and possibly rats) to safely conduct research in bacterial infection treatment and environmental exposure models. A qualified applicant is expected to conduct many in vitro assays of drug testing or environmental exposure (e.g., vapor extract) using bacteria and eukaryotic cells. The applicant is expected to learn how to carry out experiments, collect and process animal tissues for immunohistochemistry, determine bacterial burden in infected animals, and apply cellular and molecular biology techniques. Therefore, the applicant must be willing to learn quantitative PCR, Western blot, and ELISA. Importantly, the applicant must be able to work both independently and with other individuals to perform experiments that are reproducible, assist in the design and development of methods and procedures, and analyze data. Furthermore, the applicant will need to have good communication skills.
Good housekeeping and recording of all experimental details and results in a lab notebook, including images and possibly video (in lab server folder) when applicable, are required as good laboratory practices. Experiences in some or any of the aforementioned areas are required. While it is important to learn good techniques, the laboratory is more interested in individuals with warm personalities who are more research-focused than technique-focused. Applicants who are eager to answer research questions and interested in proposing hypothetical answers to those questions are highly encouraged to apply.
Some basic experience in biology and/or chemistry lab such as molecular biology or biochemistry.
