Nursing Services Director for Ambulatory Care Services: Neurosciences, Behavioral Health, CMC and Rehabilitation –PMR, Orthopedics
Basic Function and Responsibility:
Provides professional nursing leadership, administrative oversight, and strategic direction with and through clinical nursing directors and nursing supervisors for the practice of Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Advanced Practice Nurses and others involved in clinical patient services in Service Line. Collaborates with Service Line leadership team to develop and deploy innovative initiatives that enhance the coordination of care delivery for ACS patients standardly across all clinics in Service Line. Partners with inpatient leadership teams to enhance care coordination across the continuum of care. Provides and continually improves health care services, education and research in support of the mission and goals of the Health System and Nursing at Michigan. Ensures that processes meet or exceed regulatory and professional standards. Supervises the quality of nursing and clinical assistive staff services provided to patients in Ambulatory Care Services. Initiates and implements policies, programs, reimbursement models, and evaluations related to Service line patient population. Maximizes patient and staff satisfaction within human systems and material resources.
Supervision Received: Administratively responsible to the Chief Nursing Officer, Ambulatory Care Services. Collaborates with the Medical Director of the Service Line for operation of the clinical care across operating units within the clinics. Works collaboratively with ACS administrators, clinical department leadership, medical leads, and operations supervisors. Collaborates with UMHS leaders across the health system to integrate the standards and quality for patients across the care continuum. Supports the alignment of UMSN with ACS processes, practices for education of students, faculty practice, and research, as appropriate.
Supervision Exercised: Responsible for the management and nursing leadership functions of nursing services for Ambulatory Care Services. Responsible for clinical competence for regular and temporary employees and Licensed Practical Nurses, and the professional practice of all levels of Registered Nurses. Collaborates with medical leads, administrators, and operations managers in strategy as well as the administrative and functional supervision of nursing and clinical assistive staff.
Partners with Service Line leadership team to direct strategic priorities across multiple clinic sites.
Directs the recruitment, interviewing and selection of all levels of nurses, staff in Patient and Family Support Services, and clinical assistive personnel. Works collaboratively with leadership teams in the hiring process.
Oversees and provides supervision, counsel, discipline, and performance evaluation of nursing supervisors, nursing and clinical assistive staff, with feedback from administrators, medical staff and operations managers.
Oversees the professional development of nurses and the development and training in clinical skills of all nursing and clinical assistive staff.
Provide leadership for the development, implementation and evaluation of standards of nursing practice and for interdisciplinary clinical guidelines, using best evidence.
In collaboration with other members of the ACU leadership team, identify and plan for staffing consistent with the needs of the patient population and budgetary requirements, and appropriate to the scopes of a variety of roles.
Participate in and coordinate the development, implementation and evaluation of multi-disciplinary patient care activities and programs.
Work collaboratively with medical directors and leads, and administrative and operations managers, to identify and resolve operational problems, implement process improvements, and implement standard work across Service Line.
Provides leadership, assists and advises with the Medical Director, Administrator, medical leads and operations managers in satisfying other regulatory standards.
Knowledge of payer programs and demonstration projects relevant to Product Line patient population, such as bundled payments and other reimbursement models.
Represent nursing services in inter-unit planning and problem-solving regarding patient care.
Plan, coordinate and evaluate LEAN initiatives and other quality improvement activities.
Interpret and implement Hospital and University policies and procedures.
Facilitate the education of health sciences students.
Evaluate and manage clinical equipment and recommend necessary expenditures.
Assure compliance with affirmative action, regulatory, legal, patient care and safety programs.
Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in Michigan.
Required Educational Requirement:
Master's degree in Nursing or Health Care Administration, Public Health, Business or related field (a Juris Doctor degree may be considered)
If Master's degree is not in Nursing, a Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required
Four or more years of progressively responsible ambulatory care nursing experience.
Four or more years of demonstrated competence and leadership in an ambulatory care management role are necessary.
Demonstrated ability to build relationships and work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary leadership team.
Demonstrated leadership abilities, self-confidence and assertiveness in a variety of contexts.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to communicate expectations, to lead by actions as well as words, to build consensus and to share credit for success.
Demonstrated ability to manage and lead diverse, multi-disciplinary groups.
Demonstrated strong analytical and problem solving skills, knowledge of basic accounting principles and budgetary practices.
Strong ambulatory experience.
Demonstrated understanding of regulatory/safety in a clinical setting.
Demonstrated understanding of regulatory requirements for procedural sedation.
Creativity and a high level of energy to innovate on current care delivery models.
Strategic thinking and project management skills.

Certification in clinic specialty or Nurse Executive.
Experience providing leadership for advanced practice nurses.
Broad human resources, financial, and program management experience.
Proficiency with the system applications used in Michigan Medicine, such as MiChart, OneStaff, and Wolverine Access.
Experience in LEAN techniques, operations improvement, marketing, and/or strategic planning.
Knowledge of Michigan Medicine policies and procedures.

Hours: 40 hours per week Specific hours and days to be determined upon hire. Location: Multiple sites within the health system in ambulatory care settings.
