Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume) :
Bachelor of Science (foreign equivalent or higher) in Biology, Marine Biology, or related field. Prior experience utilizing lab equipment related to the field. Marine research experience in the field and/or laboratory. Experience with organizing and analyzing large data sets.
Preferred Qualifications :
Master of Science (foreign equivalent or higher) in Biology, Marine Biology, or related field. Experience in water quality monitoring and related laboratory and field procedures, including analysis of chlorophyll and nutrient concentrations. Knowledge of phytoplankton and HABs, including species identification. Experience with clams and oysters. Experience using GIS software. Experience synthesizing large data sets into figures and reports. Command of statistical analyses.
Brief Description of Duties:
The SoMAS Restoration Monitoring Associate will conduct research and support laboratory projects. This position is primarily responsible for executing the laboratory components of the NYS Long Island Shellfish Restoration Project, which supports efforts to improve Long Island's water quality and bolster the economies and resiliency of coastal communities by restoring native shellfish populations to coastal waters.
The selected candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills, exercising strong organizational skills with an exceptional attention to detail. Essential for this role is the adeptness to work independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving.
Conduct experiments with water quality parameters including size-fractionated chlorophyll concentrations, nutrient concentrations, and phytoplankton species composition and the measurement of condition and gonad indexes in clams and oysters .
Organize, synthesize, and perform data and statistical analysis (i.e. plotting data, GIS-based plotting) . Analyze results, prepare reports and help communicate results to state officials at NYSDEC.
Assist with field sampling as needed.
Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Non-exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.
