The Groves Lab at University of California, Berkeley, studies molecular mechanisms of signal transduction at the cell membrane. We use a variety of single molecule and fluorescence imaging techniques, combined with optical spectroscopy, to probe the movement, assembly, and function of signaling proteins both in living cells and in reconstituted membrane systems. Additionally, we employ micro- and nano-fabrication techniques to pattern supported membrane substrates to enable unique types of physical measurements on biological systems. The candidate will be working on receptor signaling in multiple cell types, for live cell experiments, and will also express, purify, and reconstitute proteins in cell-free experiments.
The selected candidate will conduct live cell single molecule imaging experiments focusing on the major receptor systems currently under study (T cell receptor and EGF receptor). This will involve helping supervise a team of graduate students and postdocs, both at the technical level as well as at the level of conceptualizing experimental results and publishing papers.
Minimum/Basic Qualifications required at the time of application:
PhD or equivalent international degree
Additional Qualifications (must be met by start date of the job):
3 year post Ph.D research experience
PhD or equivalent international degree in biophysics, biology, or chemistry
Strong written and oral technical communications skills
Demonstrated leadership experience
2 years or more in the following technical areas:
single molecule fluorescence microscopy in live cells
supported bilayer preparation
