Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University is seeking applicants for an Agriculture Specialist I / II in the Iowa State Research Farms department.
The Agriculture Specialist I/II will be responsible for planting, maintaining and harvesting field experiments; this includes equipment repair and maintenance, keeping testing sites free of weeds, and scouting/treating for insects and disease. This position will effectively communicate and collaborate with 3rd party labor, maintain strict inventory tracking records, locate suitable sites state-wide for experiments and coordinate with cooperators regarding field logistics for planting and harvesting. Additionally, this position will be expected to adhere to and contribute to an established safety culture.
Excellent communication (both oral and written) skills will be essential for success in this position.The successful candidate will possess the ability to interact with agriculture professionals from a variety of disciplines (agronomy, pathology, seed production, seed sales, plant breeding) in an informed and confident manner. They will be a motivated self-starter with an ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-based environment. The candidate will also have the ability to balance a variety of projects, prioritize tasks, meet deadlines and produce exceptional results. The essential physical functions of the position require the ability to lift up to 75 pounds. All college employees are expected to interact collegiality and in a professional manner and maintain the highest standards of integrity and ethics.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and related experience; OR a combination of education and related experience totaling more than 4 years.
Preferred Education and Experience:
-Field research experience in Agronomy or related area. -Experience that demonstrates knowledge of experimental design and best management practices for field plot research. -Experience operating field research equipment, (e.g., tractors, combines, sprayers).
This position will be expected to work occasional weekends and overnights.
