The Department of Psychiatry-Neuropsychology Section and the Michigan Alzheimer’s Disease Center within the Department of Neurology is seeking a Research Laboratory Specialist Senior to join its research team.
We are seeking an experienced, positive, highly motivated, organized, autonomous person with excellent multi-tasking ability and record-keeping skills to work with the principal investigator and other research team members to accurately and efficiently carry out a range of tasks associated with a variety of research studies. The characteristic duties and responsibilities of this position may evolve over time to match changing needs and priorities.
The emphasis of this research position is on the acquisition, management, analysis, and, to a lesser degree, the interpretation of neuroimaging data. The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with faculty and staff in lab management, including training of students/post-doctoral fellows along with database management. The candidate will be able to operate in a semi-independent manner to assist in clinical research and related projects. Extensive experience (2+ years) of programming experience with shell scripting and Matlab is necessary as is experience with imaging analysis platforms such as FreeSurfer, FSL, SPM and MATLAB. The successful candidate will be expected to track and monitor data collection (including quality control/assurance monitoring) and storage/maintenance thereof. The applicant will ensure data processing meets timelines and must be able to keep deadlines, communicate clearly, and solve problems as they arise. It is also expected that the successful applicant will maintain and develop expertise in cutting-edge collection and analytic methods.
Minor duties could include assisting with the creation of posters, papers and presentations for scientific meetings and/or grant submissions, and handling other scientific administration and clerical activities as directed to support research projects.
MRI/fMRI collection, processing, and analysis with a lesser focus on interpretation
Learning new techniques (e.g., ASL, diffusion imaging, graph theory) and applying those techniques to data that has already been collected by the lab
Helping design experiments to test differences in brain structure and neural activity between clinical groups, such as persons with Alzheimer's or mild cognitive impairment (MCI)
Figure creation and assistance with writing manuscripts
Database development and management.
Writing programing scripts to streamline data processing and analysis
Schedule and revise MRI appointments as needed
Ensure all study related documentation for MRI and PET is completed accurately
Perform general office and administrative duties as assigned
Other duties as directed by the Principal Investigator
- Requires Bachelor degree in a science or health-related field or equivalent education and experience
- Computer proficiency (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and EndNote), including programming languages (i.e., Python, FreeSurfer, R, Matlab, Swift, C & Git)- Extensive experience (5+ years) with processing and imaging analysis platforms such as Freesurfer, FSL, and SPM.- Confident and highly motivated with excellent multi-tasking ability and record-keeping skills.- Outstanding organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail.- Professional demeanor and excellent interpersonal and communication skills.- Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision. - Ability to work with diverse teams of people in a diplomatic, collaborative and effective manner.- Ability to problem-solve and establish timelines and priorities.- Available to work some evenings and weekends as necessary ? Two or more years of programming experience with shell scripting and Matlab? Experience analyzing both functional and structural MRI data? Able to use Unix for both data analysis and connecting to servers? Experience with univariate and multivariate analysis, used with both neuroimaging and behavioral data? Experience creating neuroimaging figures using programs such as MRIcroGL and behavioral figures with software such as Rstudio
Experience working with older adults and familiarity with associated MRI based processing methods
Research experience with investigator-initiated and federal sponsored trials.
Experience working and interacting with research participants.
Experience with Electronic Data Capture.
Proficiency in using statistical analysis packages such as SAS and SPSS or other research laboratory programs
Demonstrated understanding of Good Clinical Practice and HIPAA.
A working knowledge of medical terminology and assessment of laboratory values.
Ability to multi-task and sustain a high level of organization while working with several research studies
This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
Must have reliable transportation since local travel (e.g., between UM main and outlying campuses) will be expected.
