The Foundation Accountant reports to the Controller and works under the direction of the Foundation Sr. Accountant and is responsible for complex accounting, analysis and financial reporting tasks related to all of the balance sheet and income statement accounts for the UC San Diego Foundation. The incumbent is responsible for analyzing, reviewing and preparing financial reports, preparing journal entries, coding, data entry, and reconciliation of Foundation monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial records, with a heavy emphasis on investments. The incumbent is responsible for participating in process improvement, policy development and review of financial transactions for compliance with GASB accounting standards. Incumbent will research and provide routine fiscal advice and guidance to faculty, department fund administrators and Principal Investigators related to Foundation gift funds.
Nearly all functions and tasks of this position listed below rely heavily on proven accounting and "hands-on" computer skills. Proficiency in a computerized environment is a key element to success in this position and working knowledge of computers and excellent software skills are required. Extensive use of Excel and Word within a Windows environment is expected. The fund accounting software itself is complex and integrated: high level analytical ability in the analysis of data is required during a majority of all functions and tasks to ensure that the integrity of the system is maintained and appropriate funds are affected. Many transactions in pooled funds require analysis of the effect on individual funds and of the proper accounting for such transactions.
The incumbent will uses professional accounting concepts and completes accounting assignments that are of moderate scope where analysis of data requires a review of a variety of factors and multiple sources. Exercises judgment within defined accounting procedures and practices to determine appropriate action. Has contact with internal and external resources on a regular basis. Applies policies and procedures to resolve a variety of accounting issues.
Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of accounting principles, theory and practice. Associate degree or Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience and training (expected minimum years of professional experience with degree is 2 years).
Demonstrated experience in accounting for complex investment portfolios, including equity and fixed income securities, venture capital, real estate and other investments.
Demonstrated experience in applying and overseeing the application of proper book and market value accounting rules; basic understanding of endowment or mutual fund accounting processes and allocations.
Demonstrated experience in financial statements preparation and analysis including, but not limited to: preparation of journal entries, account reconciliation, key entry, and output control.
Working knowledge of financial transactions and systems, as well as related policy, accounting, and regulatory compliance requirements. Knowledge of accounting function and assignments. Ability to apply more advanced accounting concepts to complete work assignments.
Proven ability to analyze and summarize complex accounting data, perform complex reconciliations, prepare financial schedules, resolve complex accounting problems, comprehend, and evaluate detailed accounting and financial documents with accuracy. Ability to understand and implement Foundation's policies and procedures.
Excellent mathematical ability, with skill to comprehend and perform standard and complex calculations. Ability to apply such knowledge to the task at hand. Ability to compile data, reconcile balances, and present numerical information in a logical, consistent and comprehensive report format.
Demonstrated experience in working within a computerized environment. Proven experience and proficiency in full scale computerized general ledger financial accounting software.
