University College Academic Advising and Orientation Center and the Hayes School of Music, Part-time (20 hours per week), Professional Academic Advisor for Undeclared Music Majors
University College (UC) Academic Advising and Orientation Center (AAOC) and the Hayes School of Music (HSOM) at Appalachian State University seek qualified candidates for a half-time (20 hours per week) academic advisor position. This position does not provide benefits and is designed for specific time periods throughout fall and spring semesters and new student Orientation. UC Academic Advising and Orientation is responsible for the transition and academic advising for main campus, undeclared, degree-seeking undergraduate students at Appalachian State University.
Position Description: AAOC advisors provide academic advising for first year, transfers, early college, continuing and returning undeclared students by assisting them with academic planning and progress, major selection, and referrals to appropriate campus resources. Academic advisors also prepare for and lead all new student Orientation small group advising sessions each semester and in summer. Additionally, advisors stay current with advising and orientation technology and professional development, and assist with goal setting, strategic planning, and evaluation of services.
The Role of the Academic Advisor for Undeclared Music Majors: ? Serves as an advocate and resource for a diverse population of undeclared students intending to major in Music. ? Builds a solid rapport with students from new student Orientation until major declaration (and beyond). ? Serves as a connection to the University through mentor-student relationships in the first year and beyond. ? Provides a timely introduction to the University that sets the tone for success in the first year and beyond. ? Communicates regularly and effectively with students to provide information on making appointments, preparing for advising sessions, major declaration, career information, academic standing, and other topics of interest. ? Monitors each advisee’s academic progress to determine high-risk areas and characteristics and to intervene appropriately when necessary. ? Assists students in exploring, selecting, and declaring majors that are appropriate for their goals and assists them in connecting with their academic departments as soon as possible to ensure accurate, timely advice regarding the majors. ? Stays current with and knowledgeable of academic policies and procedures and provides the students with timely, accurate information on these policies and procedures. ? Assists in academic planning and course selection. ? Serves as a referral source for information on counseling, career planning, financial aid, student engagement, academic resources, and other student services. ? Serves as liaison between the AAOC and HSOM and develops and maintains a productive working relationship with the professional advisor and faculty advisors in the HSOM.
Specific Responsibilities: ? Advises and manages a caseload of approximately 200-225 undeclared Music majors on a part-time (20 hours per week) basis and leads small group advising sessions during summer, fall and spring academic Orientation periods (for Music majors and other intended majors). ? Meets with all required students in the caseload at least once during the semester for academic planning. Also, meets with students who have voluntary advising as needed. ? Monitors all students in the caseload who are on academic probation. ? Builds class schedules for first semester Music majors prior to Orientation. ? Prepares for and leads all new student Orientation small group advising sessions each semester and in summer which includes Music majors as well as other majors. ? Attends all training events scheduled for advisors as follows:
New advisors: complete the Advisor Training Model, apprentice with a seasoned, full-time advisor/mentor, attend monthly staff meetings and advisor development sessions, and all new student Orientation professional development sessions.
Continuing advisors: attend monthly staff meetings and advisor development sessions as well as additional professional development sessions offered throughout the year. All advisors are expected to stay abreast of university academic policies and procedures, current research and developments in the field of academic advising and to share resources with their colleagues.
? Keeps accurate records of student contacts/advising notes, documents student visits for accountability purposes, and maintains confidentiality. ? Uses technology in an appropriate and professional manner and stays current with advising and Orientation technology (Banner 9 and Self-Service, DegreeWorks, AdvisorTrac, Early Registration Advising course, Slate, Docuware etc.). ? Serves as the liaison between the AAOC and the Hayes School of Music to learn and inform both areas of changes in curricula, policy, personnel, and procedures. ? Establishes and maintains collegial, respectful relationships with colleagues, students, parents and families, and demonstrates a commitment to diversity and inclusion. ? Actively participates in all current and new initiatives of the AAOC. ? Assists with special projects as deemed appropriate by the AAOC Leadership Team.
Qualifications: Master’s degree required with an emphasis in student affairs, higher education, music or related area. The successful candidate will have experience working with students in a college setting; will possess keen attention to detail, excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as outstanding organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills; and will have a significantly advanced technology experience. Successful candidates will possess energy, enthusiasm, and a positive approach to work; will demonstrate an excellent rapport with students, colleagues and the campus community; will demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion and the educational development of students.
