Under the general supervision of the assistant director of the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), the incumbent serves as EOP Renaissance Scholars Program (RSP) Coordinator to provide comprehensive support services to current and former foster youth college students including pre-admission advising, orientation, academic advising, personal and career counseling, financial aid, and budget guidance. Incumbent counsels students in regards to academic progress and is proactive in providing interventions and making appropriate referrals to campus resources to support student success. Monitors academic standing of EOP RSP students. Responsible for recruitment, retention, and graduation of EOP RSP students.
Oversees the EOP RSP admissions process. Incumbent assists in various aspects of EOP student admissions including, but not limited to, outreach presentations and review of EOP and EOP RSP applicant information for selection of EOP and EOP RSP student cohorts. Reviews potential students transcripts, test scores, CSU eligibility index, recommendation letters and autobiographical information. Maintains contact with all foster youth applicants to aid their admission process and provide guidance about their application, outstanding documentation, and their admission status.
This position represents California State University San Bernardino at off-campus/on-campus EOP events. The incumbent works collaboratively with local child welfare agencies, area high schools, and community colleges, and assists in attracting a diverse undergraduate student population. The incumbent advises and counsels current and prospective EOP and EOP RSP students, and their families/guardians on general CSU and specific EOP and EOP RSP admissions processes, and other university policies and requirements. Provides EOP, EOP RSP, and university information to faculty, community colleges, high schools, and community groups.
Disseminates resource information. Keeps the EOP counseling staff informed about any information that may impact EOP Renaissance Scholars students. Responsible for recruiting, hiring, training, and supervising peer mentors. Plans and organizes social events, cultural trips and workshops for scholars.
Responsible for recruiting, hiring, training, and supervising EOP Renaissance Scholar graduate-level intern(s). Must maintain current field instructor training and status, conduct weekly individual supervision meetings, review and provide feedback on weekly process recordings, establish a learning plan appropriate for the individual's learning style, complete student evaluations, meet quarterly with the intern's field liaison, and ensure an enriching learning experience that complies with all requirements of the intern's graduate program.
Attends conferences/meetings and keep abreast of new developments/legislation on issues addressing current and former foster youth, access and equity programs and academic advising. Participates in foster youth advocacy and advisory councils.
Responsible for the development and funding efforts of the EOP RSP, including but not limited to completing prospect research on potential funds/foundations, writing/submitting grants, writing/submitting grant progress reports, managing multiple grant budgets and conducting presentations to potential funders. Serve on appropriate on-campus committees and in various organizations representing the interests of EOP RSP and its constituents.
Serves as back-up EOP counselor, assists colleagues, and performs other duties as assigned. Responsible for collecting, organizing, creating and submitting quarterly and/or annual reports summarizing efforts that include data and recommendations and any other ad hoc reports requested by EOP Assistant Director and EOP Director.
The incumbent will be relied upon to provide insight, direction and recommendations to unique and sometimes sensitive issues, and is expected to independently and collaboratively resolve complex problems through the use of highly effective communication skills. The person holding this position is considered a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
Education & Experience: Applicants must have a Bachelor's Degree or higher from a four-year college or university in the Behavioral Sciences, Psychology or Social Work, or a related field AND three (3) years of progressively responsible professional experience in a student services program. A Master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience.
A Master's degree is desired. A Master's degree in School Counseling, Clinical Counseling or Educational Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field is preferred.
Upper division or graduate course work in individual and group counseling, career counseling and conflict resolution is preferred.
Knowledge of professional counseling theories and techniques is desired.
Demonstrated experience working with current or former foster youth.
Working knowledge or experience in relaying university degree requirements including major and general education coursework and developing educational plans.
Experience in grant writing, fundraising, and event planning is preferred as these are considered specialized skills.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Knowledge in how to operate standard office equipment and software including PeopleSoft, Microsoft Office (Access, PowerPoint, Excel and Word) and database management.
Adaptability and aptitude for solution-oriented problem solving that promotes student success.
Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
Experience in collecting, analyzing, and evaluating data, as well as developing verbal and written presentations regarding their assessment of the data collected. Incumbent will need to be able to handle sensitive and confidential information with diplomacy and discretion.
General knowledge of counseling techniques and counseling theory.
Committed to acquiring knowledge of accommodation resources available to students to ensure equal access to learning.
Collaborate and maintain effective working relationships with various campus departments/units and community partners.
Early morning, evening or weekend hours may be required, as needed to travel, participate in program outreach efforts/events/activities/conferences.
Applicants must have knowledge of and strict adherence to one of the nationally recognized counselor code of ethics, including the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), American Counseling Association (ACA), or the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), depending on their educational field, and the Core Values of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA).

Ability to analyze and evaluate applications and transcripts and acquire knowledge of Transfer Admissions Agreements.
