Position Summary: The Statewide IPM Program reports to the UC Vice President for Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR). The unit develops and administers programs in integrated pest management extension through a communications unit and Cooperative Extension advisors that develop informational products for print and the Web.
As part of the Production and Information Technology team, this position's responsibilities include:
1) Providing support, maintenance and updates for departmental computer systems, commercial and custom software, network, and peripherals. Working with system administrators, programmers and vendors to ensure continuous operation of various web servers and services, databases, systems and weather networks by monitoring, reporting and initiating troubleshooting steps as necessary.
2) Supporting the development of web applications and services including, but not limited to, researching, writing, modifying, testing, debugging, troubleshooting and maintaining source code, and technical and user documentation.
3) Taking care of day-to-day operation of UC IPM's weather information system to ensure broad, high quality data sets. Quality controlling the data and solving data and file inconsistencies, and supporting networks of electronic weather stations and the data acquisition hardware and software, including configuration and maintenance.

Employment is contingent upon successfully clearing the FBI/DOJ background check both from the Department of Justice and the FBI, prior to the first day of UC Employment.
Occasionally adjust work schedule and lunch hours required by business operations. Work occasional overtime.

Duty 1: - Provide tiered 1 technical support for the department by troubleshooting and fixing hardware and software problems or proposing solutions as appropriate. - Monitor servers, systems and automated tasks to ensure that they are operational and produces accurate outcomes. - Assist in identifying appropriate hardware and software for departmental use. - Install, setup, configure and maintain hardware, software and backup systems. - Perform system maintenance, including software and hardware updates and backups. - Serve as backup system administrator. Duty 25: - Use and configure communications software programs to acquire weather data from multiple sources and to store data in a database. Identify problems, determine likely sources, and take appropriate action to correct and follows up. - Analyze computer-determined errors and update database to make corrections or set quality control flags. - Coordinate with station managers and vendors to gather required information to describe station, its configuration, and its location and to replace sensors or modems or calibrates electronic sensors. - Analyze data logging programs and output variable tables for electronic weather stations. Develop control files to assign data properly to database variables. Define weather stations in weather database; update station histories and related files to record station additions and changes to existing stations. Function:Weather System Support Percent: 25

Help Desk and System Support - Knowledge and skills of the principles and methods of computer systems, servers and network. Skill to effectively install, use, and maintain Macintosh, Windows, and Unix-based computers and related peripherals (such as keyboards, pointing devices, printers, external drives), and Mac, Windows, and Unix operating systems, including file organization and manipulation, help, and file search. - Skill to effectively use Windows and Mac OS operating systems and the software applications that runs on these OSes; including Microsoft Office; common Web browsers; calendaring and e-mail clients; and basic features of file and image manipulation software such as Acrobat, Photoshop. - Skills to troubleshoot operating systems, desktop computers, network and telecommunications software and hardware. - Strong familiarity with using content management systems (CMS).
Weather System Support - Skill in handling large amounts of data that flow through a variety of processes for quality control and manipulation. - Skill in keeping detailed, accurate, current records. Required
- Skill in using relational databases and SQL to extract and manipulate data and generate specialized reports. - Knowledge of common weather station instruments, how to use them, and their installation and deployment. - Skill in applying weather and climate analyses to establish weather data quality control parameters. - Skill to install and maintain specialized software for weather data acquisition. - Skill in applying judgment to determine sources of weather data inconsistencies and correct them. - Skilled with using the command line interface for Windows, Mac OS or Unix systems. - Knowledge of biological and pest management sciences.
