The Department Manager (DM) manages all aspects of the daily operations of the department, including supervision of other departmental staff members. This position reports to the Chair of the department, works closely with the fiscal and enrollment staff in the Dean's Office, and has a dotted line reporting relationship to the Senior Fiscal Officer in order to reflect the nature of the position and the professional skill and expertise required.
This is an unclassified, unrepresented, 1.0 FTE, 12 month appointment.
The Department Manager supports the Department Chair and also works autonomously to fulfill the expectations of the position. The DM occupies a robust position that is relied upon heavily by students, faculty, the Department Chair, and the College. During peak times the incumbent may work long hours to ensure deadlines are met and that the work products are of an exceptional quality. The DM will be assigned tasks by the Department Chair/Senior Fiscal Officer but for the most part they work independently. The DM must understand what is expected of them and ask for clarification/assistance when necessary. The DM should graciously accept feed-back, as well as recognize their own need for professional development and proactively identify ways to achieve the necessary skills for improvement.
Bachelor's degree and at least 5 years in an office environment which includes independent experience with: (1) working with budgets and spreadsheets, (2) coordinating processes that involve the cooperation of many people at varying levels in the organization, and (3) guiding the work of other staff in the office.
Successful completion of a background check.
Familiar with enterprise-wide information systems, such as Banner.
Proficient with typical office software such as Word and Excel; strong experience utilizing electronic communication such as email and listserves as well as the ability to seek information on the internet; familiar with networked file storage.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal).
Ability to organize and plan complex tasks that require many steps to complete.
Ability to manage deadlines and deal with multiple tasks and priorities.
Ability to work with diverse people and maintain a professional, collegial atmosphere.
Supervision of front-line staff and/or students.
Self-motivated, able to work independently and make decisions that implement plans and procedures which move the department forward.
High degree of responsiveness and respect toward others.
Basic knowledge of web editing.
Experience working in higher education.
Experience with PowerPoint and databases.
Experience working with collective bargaining agreements.
