Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The department of Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University is seeking applicants for a Teaching Lab Associate. This position will assist the teaching lab coordinators for Biology 211L and 212L with the preparation, maintenance, and set-up of the biology teaching labs. This position will work with and maintain technical equipment and computer software/hardware used in teaching biological concepts. The Teaching Lab Associate will supervise and provide guidance for undergraduate lab assistants and teaching assistants. In addition, this position will assist in keeping records, lab policies, and standard operating procedures for lab set ups and safety. The successful candidate needs to be available to accommodate lab preparation and safety needs contingent on class scheduling. This will require adopting a fluid work schedule from semester to semester depending on course needs and student enrollment. In addition, the successful candidate needs a working knowledge of concepts and methodology in biology or a related discipline. Attention to detail, effective communication with diverse communities (both verbal and written), and the ability to conduct multiple, complex tasks in an ever changing environment are critical skills needed for this position.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and 1 year of related experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in a biological science or related discipline. Professional experience in a teaching laboratory, either through teaching or preparatory work for a lab course or related program. Experience providing routine maintenance of lab equipment. Experience preparing plant and animal specimens for instructional purposes. Experience preparing and writing instructional protocols. Experience organizing materials and/or projects that are complicated in nature. Experience with computer software (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite), photo editing software and online learning management systems. Supervisory experience. Experience in an independent work environment that includes independent decision making.
The Teaching Laboratory Associate works 10 months a year. This position does not work during the months of June and July.
