The Ice Hockey Coach is a year round, full time position that is responsible for all organizational, administrative and coaching duties of the ACHA Division I Hockey program, including practice and skill session planning, organization, game scheduling, video coordination, game management, recruiting coordination, budgeting, and compliance with all OHIO University and ACHA regulations. The Ice Hockey Coach also provides oversight of the Bird Arena Adult Hockey League (BAHL) and the Learn to Play Hockey programs. Supervision includes one Assistant Ice Hockey Coach (Graduate Assistant) and approximately 15 student employees. The Ice Hockey Coach is expected to promote and facilitate effective communication and collaboration across all efforts of the department and with University and community partners.
Effectively coach, manage and lead the Ohio University ACHA Division I Ice Hockey program. Create a competitive schedule for each season by managing contracts with opposing teams and organizing game day operations, including but not limited to referees, scorekeepers, media, etc. Establish and maintain a positive culture that values and prioritizes accountability and athlete well-being. Coordinate with staff for effective risk management and safety practices throughout the rink and hockey programs. Maintain optimum condition and amount of equipment needed to be successful. Identify and develop relationships with potential Ohio University student athletes.
Coordinate all communication and engagement between the Ice Hockey program and the community at both the local and national levels through press releases, website administration, social media, media events, on-line broadcasts, attending the weekly coaches' radio show, and any other applicable means. Manage and disseminate relevant sport information such as game results, team statistics, and league standings in a timely manner. Create successful game themes to enhance the fan experience. Lead communication efforts with hockey alumni to create avenues for engagement, collect historical data, raise awareness of foundation accounts, and cultivate donations.
Competently manages resources and administers budgets associated with OHIO Hockey. Ensure travel is economically sustainable. Coordinate team transportation, meals, lodging, etc. Generate revenue through ticket sales and donations. Provide excellent stewardship for the Ice Hockey foundation accounts. Maintain positive relationships with OHIO Hockey stakeholders.
Oversee the Bird Arena Adult Hockey League and the Learn to Play Hockey programs. Schedule officials, instructors, and provide on-ice instruction. Maintain the budget and supplies for both programs.
Actively contribute as a staff member of the Department of Campus Recreation and Division of Student Affairs to uphold the framework of equity and social justice and the personal well-being of the university community. Demonstrates effort to understand individual and collective roles in creating inclusive environments with a perspective of Social Justice. Promotes equity through the (1) identification and removal of barriers, (2) facilitation of learning, (3) cultivation of community, and (4) empowerment of people. Addresses needs related to student development and well-being in order to increase retention, academic progress and graduation rates; including tracking the retention and persistence of marginalized identities. Advances cultural competency at Ohio University and the surrounding community through staff training, and by infusing cultural competency into OHIO Hockey.
Bachelor’s Degree 3-5 years coaching experience 1-2 years management experience
Master’s Degree USA Hockey Coach Level 4 Preferred
