Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Innovative Therapy Nursing Specialist for the Nursing Department in the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.
The Innovative Therapy Nursing Specialist provides clinical coordination and ensures continuity of care to a specified group of patients in the ambulatory setting. These increased specific duties within this updated position serve a critical need to the mission of the cancer center in the interface of support for clinical practice needs of patient care and identifying patients who will benefit from innovative therapy including newly approved standards of care and clinical trials. Specifically, duties include serving as a liaison to disseminate focused priorities of the National Cancer Institute and Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program by communicating opportunities within the Cancer Center Support Grant Clinical Investigations and Precision Therapeutics Program as well as the NCI Experimental Therapeutics-Clinical Trials Network. In collaboration with other members of the Unit, this individual is responsible for continuing to ensure that high quality, comprehensive services are delivered to patients. The scope of the position is defined by the Nurse Practice Act of the State of New Jersey, and the Standard Operating Procedures set forth by the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Works with the physician and /or designated Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) to coordinate the delivery nursing of nursing care to the patient population. In collaboration with the physician, plans, coordinates, delivers and evaluates care to meet individualized patient needs.
Maintains database of clinical information on all patients who receive care in the Unit or identified for innovative therapy evaluation including but not limited to national priorities such as precision medicine, immunotherapies, and biomarker stratified treatments as well as potential clinical trials.
Responsible for understanding the menu of available innovative therapies available across disease units at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.
Attends tumor study group meetings including Clinical Investigations/Precision Therapeutics Meetings and UM1 Working Groups meetings to ensure a coordinated, collaborative team-based approach to identify candidates for novel therapeutic approaches.
Works with the UM1 Program Support Specialist and CCSG Program Development Analysts to disseminate information to clinical programs in the evaluation of innovative cancer treatments consistent with national priorities for developmental therapeutics clinical cancer research using a coordinated, collaborative, and inclusive team-based approach for supporting eligible patients for these studies.
Communicates with scientific leadership regarding emerging opportunities for patients. Attends relevant tumor study group meetings to disseminate this information and match patient populations to emerging opportunities. Attends ET-CTN calls to remain abreast of emerging opportunities.
Communicates with UM1 Program Support Specialist and CCSG Program Support Specialists to support Project Team Applications and Submissions as well as grant and protocol opportunities that will serve the needs of patients at the Cancer Center.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing with a license to practice in the State of New Jersey.
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN).
Three (3) years oncology-specific nursing experience with a focus on the management of patients in the inpatient or ambulatory setting.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Oncology Nursing Certification (OCN) required within two (2) years of employment.
American Heart Association: Basic Cardiac Life Support.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
PHYSICALDEMANDS: Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Lifting up to 25 lbs.
