The First Year Experience (FYE) works to create ties across Student Life units providing programming and resources for first year students, through coordinating marketing, assessment, and program aspirations across all partnering units. FYE aspires for all first year students to create their own journey, discover themselves and others, connect across difference, and thrive in a healthy environment. FYE assists the residential curriculum by assisting with creating a welcoming, accepting, safe, open, and respectful environment for people of all social identity groups through programming, events, and classes. In addition to optional opportunities, FYE required programs seek to reduce the occurrence of harmful behaviors and promote positive healthy behaviors by providing structured opportunities for students to: 1) make informed decisions about their wellness, 2) practice communication strategies to effectively engage with others, and 3) practice skills for intervening in harmful situations.
The Program Manager leads out FYE’s optional programs by managing program and curriculum development, supervision of peer student coordinator staff, relationship management with partnering units, and convening programmatic leadership teams. The Program Manager will work alongside the professional staff in First Year Experience on the creation of socially just communities in the residence halls and apartments via the implementation of initiatives and activities.
Program Management (40%)
Collaborate with First Year Experience stakeholders in developing and implementing each portion of the Student Life first-year curriculum.
Create content with Housing Communication and Auxiliary Marketing for all FYE marketing and communication efforts.
Develop overall marketing strategy for optional FYE programs, with both online and offline tools, to meet the expansion goals of University Housing and Student Life, specifically managing the FYE Student Life website.
Support FYE Marketing plan through managing updates to FYE website and FYE presence on Housing website, the Family Matters newsletter, the FYE newsletter, email communication, and other marketing efforts.
Contribute to proposals for future funding, expansion, and sustainability of the FYE program and courses.
Coordinate annual signature events sponsored by the First Year Experience.
Research emerging and relevant pedagogy around program areas and incorporating concepts into program content.
Develop creative ideas and solutions to strengthen, expand, and sustain the FYE program curriculum.
Lead partnership with Graduate Residence Education for first-year Residential Mentoring program.
Select, train, develop, and supervise the First Year Experience Student Coordinator position program through programmatic development, management, recruitment, selection, training, and collaboration. Leading this area of work includes the following tasks:
Create program learning outcomes, evaluation, and assessment to ensure data driven decisions.
Design a curriculum of offerings to meet the learning outcomes and needs of students.
Supervise student staff and development of student leaders connected to program.
Plan and execute events in support of learning outcomes and FYE strategic planning.
Recruit students at all levels of programmatic involvement including marketing, branding and outreach.
Recruit, hire, train, and supervise graduate student coordinator for optional FYE programs
Develop and maintain connections with academic units and departments engaged in incoming student programs to assess connections and overlap.
Keep stakeholders and external entities informed of optional FYE initiatives through quarterly update reports, managing portions of FYE staff-facing Google site, and other methods.
Engage in Divisional and University-wide committee work related the mission of the First Year Experience.
Responsible for developing and ensuring comprehensive training in all optional FYE work including training of Residence Education Leadership Team and all Residential Staff.
Engage in outreach and build connections with universities involved in educational programming for incoming students.
Serve as a member of University Welcome to Michigan Committee, FYE Network, and University Mentoring Consortium.
Housing Leadership (10%)
Regularly liaise Leadership Team and Student Life decision makers of the status, participation, curricular developments, collaboration, accomplishments, and needs of the FYE program.
Serve on Student Life committees & external committees as unit interests align in order to best represent FYE work on campus.
Master’s degree in related field is required (Higher Education, Sociology, Psychology, Social Work).
At least one year of experience (graduate or professional) in student affairs and/or related education services work with emphasis on building an inclusive multicultural community.
Two years of experience (graduate or professional) in student supervision/advising and program leadership experience.
Previous experience facilitating topics of social justice, diversity and inclusion.
Previous experience managing workshops, events, or programs in a higher education setting.
Previous experience working in First Year Experience, Sophomore Experience, or theme community leadership.
Experience working/living in on-campus housing or community settings.
Experience utilizing integrative learning models or high impact practices.
Familiarity with Restorative Justice principles.
Interpersonal skills including:
Strong communication skills in both written and spoken formats.
Capacity to interact and work with different constituent groups including, students, staff, and faculty.
Knowledge of multicultural education practices including:
An understanding and commitment to social justice education and student development.
Understanding of social identities, power, privilege, and oppression.
Knowledge of restorative justice principles and applying them to work with students.
Administrative skills including:
Experience in program development and implementation.
Ability to build positive relationships with others across all identities.
Ability to self-direct and prioritize multiple projects using strong organizational skills.
This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.
Job requires working weekly evening hours and periodic weekends.
Supervision exercised for: 8 First Year Experience Student Coordinators, 1 FYE Graduate Coordinator.
Supervision received from: Assistant Director, First Year Experience.
