The HITS Enterprise Infrastructure division secures, manages, and architects Michigan Medicine data centers, networks, and communication infrastructures. The team is responsible for all Michigan Medicine IT-related technical infrastructure, including data centers and communication facilities; wired, wireless, and in-house cellular networks; spectrum management; communication; complex device management; fiber/wiring plant; hosting; directories, databases, and storage; and continuity of operations institution-wide. The team collaborates with partners across Michigan Medicine to assure the security, stability, reliability, scalability, and economic management of the institution’s technology infrastructure.
Health Information Technology & Services (HITS) organization has an exciting opportunity to employ a Storage Engineer to support and maintain highly available data storage and data protection systems. This position is responsible for providing support for provisioning, using, patching, updating, and upgrading enterprise storage and data protection systems. This position will report to the HITS Enterprise Infrastructure Storage Team which is responsible for implementing and managing the Michigan Medicine Enterprise Storage environment and providing infrastructure services to support many of the enterprise wide applications used by Michigan Medicine (MM).
The team manages a large Cisco SAN fabric stretched between two primary data centers; a large SVC virtualization farm with 5+ Petabytes of SAN storage; a 5+ petabyte NAS storage farm servicing Server Share FileSystem, User Share FileSystem and research storage. TSM is the primary backup/recovery tool for backing up/recovering file systems and databases. The TSM complex consist of 4 TSM instances backing up over 2000 hosts and databases on a daily basis to redundant IBM 3584 tape libraries with 48 – 3592 cartridge drives fronted by large disk pools located at each data center.
The position requires someone who works well without supervision and who proactively anticipates and resolves problems. This role is expected to coach and mentor team members, to seek out and implement improved processes and technologies, to establish and document procedures and standards in a consistent manner, and to set an example for others by exceeding customer expectations.
Provide technical consulting to assisting customers in defining their storage needs and assisting in the implementation of our storage solutions to meet those needs.
Install, implement and maintain Enterprise Storage solutions, including the SAN and NAS solutions, Storage virtualization, multi-vendor Disk Storage Subsystems, Backup solutions including backup/recovery tools, tape libraries, and data archiving. A focus for this position would be on IBM based SAN disk technologies including IBM SVC, IBM V7000, and IBM Flash900.
Develop and document standards/procedures/strategies/scripts that maximize the functionality and reliability of the storage solution(s). Provide Storage technical assistance to HITS teams for storage needs, backup/recovery strategies, to address applications performance issues and general platform problem analysis
Maintain and enhance backup procedures, which include several large Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) servers, with hundreds of clients using both native TSM as well as Oracle TDP and VMware (VE) hypervisor-based backups.
Perform storage capacity monitoring and reporting to ensure that adequate data is available to assess the impact of growth trends and application changes.
Assess current hardware and software technology and its applicability to our environment. Make recommendations for acquisitions, engineering and configuration changes.
Position would be required to participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation, included triage of Incident/Problem/Vulnerability tickets.
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, business computing or a related field and/or equivalent combination of education, certification or experience.
Minimum of 6 years of experience in a related role requiring customer service, confidentiality, timeliness, organization, prioritization, troubleshooting, and working independently to successfully design services and workflows in an enterprise architecture.
Minimum 5 years of experience in supporting large complex highly available enterprise storage and backup solutions.
Ability to leverage appropriate technical tools to perform day-to-day administration tasks, root-cause analysis and service restoration (such as backup, restore, failover, log interpretation, and performance monitoring) for at least two of the following: SAN, NAS and enterprise backup solutions
Experience with design and deployment of storage systems using IBM SVC (Storage Virtualization Controllers).
Experience with design and deployment of storage systems using IBM Storage Arrays.
Experience with design and deployment of backup/recovery solutions using Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM)
Demonstrated ability to keep skills current with vendor technology as it changes and matures
