Research - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology has an immediate opening for a Research Lab Specialist Intermediate. This motivated, enthusiastic and team-oriented candidate will perform experimental laboratory research in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School. Research in the lab uses cell culture and rodent models to study the mechanisms of intestinal fibrosis and anti-fibrotic drug development.
• Develops, designs and conducts independent research projects related to Principal Investigator’s grants. • Reviews the literature and investigates, modifies and applies new research procedures or applications of technology, integrating new findings in field of study. • Formulates research methods and suggests options for improving quality, identifies potential problems, recommends & implements solutions, and collaborates in the development of new techniques. Coordinates data collection and screening and verifies data. Conducts analysis of data, interprets & implements research methodology based on outcome of analysis. • Presents the research results to lab members, multi-discipline groups within the UM and at professional meetings and conferences. • Writes abstracts and manuscripts for publications in peer reviewed journals. • Leads and coordinates efforts between laboratories within and outside the institution. Often requires navigation through several different disciplines including: molecular and cell biology, biochemistry, clinical research and small animals. • Collaborates with other researchers on manuscripts and long-range plan for overall research projects acting as expert in specialized area. • Trains, supervises and mentors students and junior research staff in research projects. • Trains research and support personnel in equipment operation and laboratory techniques. Explains and demonstrates technology and equipment capabilities, operations, limitations and outcomes. • Meets with PI at least weekly to update on current lab status, experimental results, future plans, issues, problems, etc.
• Manages interdepartmental collaborative projects and projects in collaboration with industry. • Drafts budgets and research plans for basic science R01 grant applications, investigator initiated studies in collaboration with industry, and University of Michigan funding mechanisms such as MCTI. • Evaluates and recommends equipment and supplies to order for the laboratory. • Writes, revises and implements standard operation procedures for equipment usage, chemicals and research protocols. • Currently supervises one research technician and one medical resident.
Master’s degree with a minimum of 4-5 years of experience in conducting independent research projects in basic science/medical research, analyzing research data, writing and publishing research papers in scientific journals, and presenting research results at meetings and conferences is required. A Significant amount of knowledge, experience and research skills in molecular biology and imaging techniques is required. Must be organized and attentive to detail with the ability to take initiative and make decisions. Must be team oriented and respectful of others’ time and opinions.
