The Michigan State University College of Human Medicine’s Office of Academic Affairs invites applications for a 0.4 FTE director of the Leadership in Medicine for the Underserved (LMU) certificate. The LMU program, based in Flint, Michigan, was designed in 2004 to provide medical students with the opportunity to work with and learn from underserved and vulnerable populations. In addition to traditional clinical medical education, LMU focuses on the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to address the varied medical needs of urban and international underserved populations.
In 2016, the College of Human Medicine (CHM) implemented an innovative new curriculum, envisioned to be responsive to the needs of students and faculty in a new technological era and a new medical landscape. This new curriculum, the Shared Discovery Curriculum (SDC), provides integrated content organized around patient complaints and concerns. The ideal candidate will collaborate with SDC leadership to ensure the experiences provided by the LMU certificate program continue to provide complementary experiences consistent with the program’s mission.Academic department and rank will be determined based upon qualifications and experience. This role reports to the Dr. Andrea Wendling, Director of the Rural and Underserved Medicine Curriculum.
The successful candidate will have a terminal degree including MD, DO, PhD or equivalent in one of the medical basic sciences, social sciences, or public health; significant experience working with underserved patients/communities; teaching experience with multiple educational modalities; curriculum design; learner assessment; and program level management. In addition, experience in any of the following areas is desirable: experience working with faculty teams; demonstrated effectiveness working with students at a variety of performance levels and experience in medical education scholarship. Academic department and rank will be determined based upon qualifications and experience.
