POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE,Nuclear Science and Engineering/Plasma Science and Fusion Center , to develop an integrated strategic plan for the development of a molten salt, liquid immersion fusion blanket. This innovative technology seeks to enable compact, high-field fusion power plants to be simpler, sooner, and lower cost. The strategic plan will describe an R&D pathway to a molten salt, liquid immersion blanket including the necessary development and experimental validation of tools to enable design. The blanket, a key technology in the ARC fusion power plant concept advanced by MIT, must serve four functions--tritium production, conversion of neutron flux to heat for the power cycle, radiation shielding, and cooling the first wall and diverter. The development of a strategic plan requires considering the availability of computational tools for heat transfer and conductive fluid flow for extreme environments, particularly high magnetic fields; methods to validate design tools; options for single effect and integrated tests; structural materials and corrosion research for extreme environments; and performance and development of tritium extraction and handling processes. This requires review of the technical literature; review and synthesis of previous experimental blanket strategic plans; and coordinating with experts in academia, industry, and at national labs in order to integrate the wide range of available expertise, experience, and knowledge into a comprehensive strategic plan.
REQUIRED : Ph.D. in a relevant discipline, e.g., mechanical engineering, physics, materials science, nuclear engineering, or systems engineering. The following skills/abilities are desirable: broad background in engineering technology; an interest and experience in fusion engineering; and the ability to integrate multiple technologies, search the technical literature, effectively communicate/coordinate with multiple technical groups, and write technical reports.
