Have full technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, executing and coordinating assignments, and for planning and developing projects which have an important effect on major Laboratory programs. This involves in depth understanding of the subject area, creativity and problem solving in the development of conceptual designs, attention to detail and confidence with codes and standards in the definition of the final design and its implementation. Initiate and maintain extensive contacts with key engineers and scientists in other areas of the Laboratory and in other organizations and skillfully negotiate critical issues.
Develop designs compliant with all technical requirements
Produce documentation that establishes the design basis and supports the design review process
Produce documentation that supports procurement activities
Oversee fabrication activities at suppliers’ facilities
Resolve timely issues that may impede progress with their tasks
Produce accurate, reliable input to the cost and scheduling planning process
Adhere to planned cost and schedule during the execution phase
Supervise the execution of tasks and projects by staff to ensure proper engineering methodology, efficiency, progress, quality and documentation. Take action to resolve technical issues when necessary.
BS in Mechanical Engineering, or similar degree, and at least 10 year of relevant experience thereafter, or MS in Mechanical Engineering, or similar degree, and at least 8 year of relevant experience thereafter.
Experience in mechanical systems design, integration and installation for complex equipment.
Full life-cycle experience, i.e. from concept to installation, including involvement in design and analysis, development of technical specifications and procedures, oversight of suppliers and active role in acceptance tests.
At least 3 years of experience leading a team of engineers and technicians on project tasks.
Effective written and oral communication skills.
MS in Mechanical Engineering, or similar degree.
Experience performing analysis, e.g. ANSYS.
Experience designing components and systems compatible with ultra high vacuum.
Experience designing cryogenic equipment.
Experience with electro-mechanical systems.
Experience designing ion sources.
Experience writing grants or proposals for DOE funding, or similar.
