Columbia World Projects (CWP) is an initiative intended to better connect Columbia University with the world at large where laws and policies are made, actions taken, and norms and attitudes are shaped. CWP will facilitate the application of academic research and scholarship in the context of efforts to address fundamental challenges in our home city, around the nation, and across the globe. We do this in large part by developing and implementing projects - in partnership with practitioners from government, nongovernmental and intergovernmental organizations, the private sector, and other entities - to test promising cross-disciplinary innovations in the field, while also seeking to enrich research and scholarship.
The Project Officer will serve as a senior member of the team working to conceptualize, design, and develop projects for CWP focused on addressing the themes of CWP Fora, which are held three to four times a year on a distinct challenge, such as cybersecurity, expanding access to energy, and improving maternal health. The incumbent will work collaboratively on matters related to project ideation, design, and development within CWP, across Columbia's schools and disciplines, and with partners from a diverse range of fields and institutions beyond the University. Reporting directly to the designated Director of Project Development or the Forum Director, the Project Officer would have the following core responsibilities:
1.Build and maintain strong working relationships with CWP staff, Columbia faculty, staff, other partners across the university, and students in all areas related to CWP project ideation, design, and development. Serve as a point of contact for the progress of certain projects.
2.Work to ensure that each project's objectives, scope, and parameters are in concert with CWP policies and procedures. Ensure that all necessary implementation partners have been identified. Engage with practitioners outside the University who are potential participants in CWP projects to develop and improve upon project ideas, and build out detailed, rigorous proposals for projects aimed at achieving measurable impact in less than five years.
3.Help create processes and procedures relating to the design and development of projects, including the development of criteria to ensure consistent monitoring and evaluation of all CWP projects.
4.Write, edit, and provide substantive feedback on memos, CWP Project Team reports, and project proposals. Assist in the development and implementation of a detailed work-plan for specific projects that include the use of performance indicators to ensure effective project monitoring, evaluation, and disclosure.
5.Engage with the Office of Alumni Development, philanthropies, foundations, and other supporters of the University.
6.Work with financial budgets and expense tracking.
7.Collaborate with communications staff to advance the digital and analog presence.
8.Additional duties as assigned.
General Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree required. Minimum five years related experience.
Additional Specific Minimum Qualifications: The incumbent must have outstanding writing and analytical skills, as well as organizational and time management skills. The incumbent must be extremely detail-oriented in a high-volume entrepreneurial environment. Demonstrated ability to develop projects over time at varying degrees of detail and adhere to project deadlines. Ability to build a network of contacts and interact effectively with people at varying organizational levels. Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to quickly and effectively write media collateral, emails, and other communications. Demonstrated experience in coordinating events in diverse, complex environments. Must be a self-starter able to envision a development pathway for the program and execute upon that vision without significant supervision. Must be people-oriented, with demonstrated evidence of highly collaborative communication skills, and strong interpersonal skills. Committed and open to working with diverse communities and organizations. Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook are required.
