CAEN, the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan’s college-wide IT group, has an exciting opening for a Web Applications Developer. You will be a member of a team that will help coordinate the use of technology with websites. You will have the opportunity to apply your knowledge and expertise as a web applications developer in order to help build innovative web applications.
As a main focus of this position, you will work with stakeholders and consultants in the creation of easy to use websites, including adding or changing administrative features that support faculty and staff members’ work on these projects. Daily activities will include: working with technical teams; creating, modifying, and testing web sites/applications; providing project management and planning; and building applications.

Application Development - Develop, maintain, and support creative web-based applications. Apply a strong knowledge of developing websites and applications using a variety of technologies to improve the usability and features of these applications.
Testing, and Quality Assurance - Enhance existing applications by developing a thorough knowledge of current business processes, data, and reporting requirements in order to develop and support the developed application. Improve existing workflows by understanding the current workflow and implementing it in technical solutions. Deliver business requirements to external vendors to implement. Document, perform and design test cases in order to provide quality assurance. Write functional requirements, develop and execute test plans. Document issues and communicate those to staff.
Support/Documentation/Communication - Produce documentation that supports web sites and applications. Implement and support data gathering and analytics. Work with external vendors and act as the main point of contact for communications between the vendor and both technical and nontechnical University faculty and staff. Create and review proposals and bids for technical implementation.
Project Management - Responsible for working with contract vendors or developers to complete projects on time and within budget. Provide timely and relevant communication to management, allowing informed decision-making regarding potential project risks, resource conflicts, and scope changes.
Training - Participate in professional development opportunities related to best practices in website development and usability.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field or web application development experience in a professional environment.
Experience writing production software in an object-oriented programming language.
Experience with Python, PHP, and Google Apps Scripting.
Experience using and/or creating APIs.
Knowledge of relational databases (MySQL, Oracle, etc) and SQL.
Experience using content management systems, such as Drupal and Wordpress.
Practical experience with Linux.
Experience using Git in a team environment.
Experience working with University faculty and staff to deliver web-based technical solutions.
Willingness to take on tough problems and try innovative solutions.
Enthusiasm, desire to learn, and interest in joining a high-energy team.
Demonstrated ability to work independently, and to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Familiarity with web accessibility guidelines and standards.
Understanding and practical knowledge of responsive web design.
Experience with an agile and iterative website development process
Experience using cloud-based hosting providers, such as Pantheon or WP-Engine.
