The successful candidate for this role will be an experienced, collaborative medical group executive with an understanding of the future trends in healthcare delivery. This person will be an engaging and visible leader with the highest levels of integrity and a transparent communication style that engenders trust across multiple stakeholder groups. This person will have an appreciation for the academic environment and what that means to practicing clinicians and patients. This person will be entrepreneurial with an enthusiasm and vision for building high functioning systems and will have an ability to bring different parties together to support a common vision that is grounded in the land grant mission of Michigan State University. Reporting to the Associate Provost and Assistant Vice President for Health Affairs and the Board of MSU Health Care, the CEO will lead a team including the Chief Medical Officer, Chief Nursing Officer, Chief Financial Officer, and Chief Information Officer.
The successful Chief Executive Officer will:
Ensure the successful, formal transition of MSU HealthTeam to the new independent 501(c)(3) MSU Health Care, Inc., to include:
Evaluate the organizational structure to ensure that all positions are appropriately aligned to create a highly efficient and responsive team structure.
Lead the finance team in a smooth transition to an independent finance and billing system.
Assess the current tools and metrics for tracking and measuring population health, clinical quality and patient safety and make adjustments as necessary.
Review all MSU Health Care policies and procedures to make sure that the organization is operating at the level of modern practice plan structures.
Assess and oversee the contract negotiation process to ensure alignment with the colleges’ goals and objectives while being nimble and creative in finding new opportunities with external partners and achieving optimal and favorable results.
Be responsible to provide strategic direction and administrative leadership to advance capacity and capability of the MSU Health Care team in order to provide greater access to a continuum of comprehensive ambulatory and outpatient services across the region.
Work closely with the deans of the College of Human Medicine, College of Osteopathic Medicine and College of Nursing to find opportunities for greater collaboration between the colleges, the clinical departments and MSU Health Care. Potential areas would include opportunities for greater administrative and clinical consistency across all clinics, consistent budgeting and financial reporting and creating alignment to reduce duplication and increase efficiencies.
Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Health Care Administration or closely related field preferred. Clinical training as a health care provider is desirable but not required.
Minimum of six years of progressively advanced leadership experience in physician practice management. Candidates should have had responsibility for and success with physician relations. Experience gained within organizations operating across multiple sites highly preferred.
Previous experience and an understanding of physician billing, reimbursement and multi-site practice management is expected.
Proven effectiveness in building and maintaining strong rapport with clinical providers, and with building and growing practices.
Track record of conceiving and implementing standardized best practices for practices across multiple sites.
Experience working with and designing physician compensation programs is desired.
Strong financial and strategic planning skills.
Demonstrated knowledge of the business aspects of group practice management, with an ability to identify and develop strong managers, staffs and teams.
Familiarity with information systems and regulatory compliance issues, particularly for the business operations of physician groups or academic practices.
Demonstrated customer service focus.
Proven ability to drive a consensus process to effect significant organizational change.
