CCE of Schenectady County is seeking a qualified and experienced educator who works as part of a team to deliver agriculture, horticulture, environmental, youth development, and other programs for CCE of Schenectady County. The Educator teaches primarily through hands on learning and demonstration techniques; strengthening youth development and leadership skills through teaching, modeling and coaching.
This position frequently collaborates with program staff, volunteers and community organizations such as the Schenectady County Department of Social Services, Schenectady Job Training Agency, Schenectady ARC, local schools, and other organizations that serve target audiences in order to effectively implement programs for impact. The Educator connects with Capital Region Agriculture and Horticulture Program staff, Eastern New York Commercial Horticulture program specialists, and Cornell faculty for latest updates in research and field production.
The Educator spends most of the growing season working out of the Sustainable Living Center and Fehr Ave gardens, branching out to schools, community organizations, and other programs during other times of the year.
The Educator directly supervises seasonal youth crew leaders as part of the Roots & Wisdom program each summer.

Bachelor's degree in agriculture, horticulture, environment, youth development, or related fields. An Associate's degree in related field plus 2 years transferrable program/functional experience may substitute for a Bachelor's degree.
Experience relevant to the role of the position including propagating, cultivating, harvesting, packing and storage of various vegetables and herbs; integrated pest management; composting and recycling techniques; teaching in environmental, youth development or related programs.
Travel Requirements - Ability to meet occasional travel requirements associated with this position. A valid NYS driver's license with the ability to drive and driving record acceptable for Association insurance coverage are required. Uses personal and/or Association vehicles to transport self and occasionally youth participants.
Ability to meet acceptable background check requirements.
Ability to work flexible hours, which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.

Coordination Skills – Ability to effectively coordinate program efforts including data management and reporting, scheduling and coordinating programs and events, compiling and maintaining materials and resources, following financial reporting requirements.
Computer Skills - Proficiency or ability to learn and effectively use software including use of the internet, program related software, and Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Excel.
Experience with community based agriculture, horticulture or environmental programs.
Experience supervising youth development programs and seasonal staff.
Position Responsibilities & Essential Functions
Program Delivery - 70%
Teach existing horticulture, agricultural, environmental and related programs through demonstration and hands on teaching methods including: preparing and winterizing garden beds; seeding; composting and recycling; integrated pest management; growing, harvesting, processing, packing, storing, selling, and marketing of vegetables, fruits, herbs and ornamental horticulture. Programs include Roots & Wisdom, Fehr Ave community farm stand, and other job development programs targeted primarily for youth.
Teach and model youth development skills including work readiness, business skills, and working cooperatively with others.
Strengthen youth development and leadership skills through modeling and coaching for seasonal crew leaders who help to deliver programs to summer youth program participants.
Teaches horticulture, agriculture, environmental or related programs throughout the year at schools and other youth development organizations and programs.
Serve as subject matter resource for assigned programs. Provides standard responses and may assist in providing more complex responses to program related questions.
Frequently interact with program participants, volunteers, community members and others are part of the program delivery process.
Occasionally apply established subject matter knowledge to create lesson plans to deliver educational programs.
Represent CCE before the public, community leaders, government officials, or others as part of program delivery.
Work in a multidisciplinary team effort to deliver program, utilizing a variety of proven educational methodologies. Assist other program staff (4-H, Recycling & Composting, Master Gardner) to deliver their assigned programs.
Meet or exceed targeted program delivery goals assigned by the supervisor.
Program Evaluation - 5%
Interact with program participants and others to obtain their evaluation of programs.
Based on established program parameters, interpret evaluation data to the constituencies.
Communicate evaluation results and findings.
May assist in analyzing program evaluation data.
May assist in making recommendations for program improvements.
Direction - 5%
Provide input to planning the delivery and structure of assigned programs.
Assist in planning the related program budgets.
Assist in developing communication strategies for related programs.
Assist in planning seasonal staffing needs for assigned programs.
Assist in developing and/or enhancing/ expanding relationships with appropriate agencies, organizations, industries and community leaders for program/ function.
Management - 5%
Solve problems and resolve conflicts that arise within assigned programs utilizing appropriate policies and procedures and with supervisor guidance as needed.
Assist with identifying, anticipating, recommending and planning for program needs/supplies.
Assist with effectively managing the program budget. Assist in identifying ways to reduce costs and maximize existing resources. Assist with managing assigned programs fundraising efforts.
Directly supervise seasonal, part-time staff (crew leaders), working with the supervisor to manage training, time cards, resolve issues, complaints, etc.
Manage volunteer recruitment and oversight for the Sustainable Living Center and Fehr Ave sites.
Coordination/Operation - 10%
Recruit program participants. Responsible for marketing, design, content and implementation involving volunteers and staff as a team, via local media, website, press releases.
Compile existing resources into educational program materials.
Implement established assigned program schedule.
Perform agriculture and horticulture responsibilities (for example preparing garden beds, planting, weeding, harvesting and washing vegetables and herbs, pest identification/management, composting) in greenhouses, garden beds and other program areas, as needed in the growing season.
Frequently lift, move or transport program & facility /gardening materials and produce, primarily in the growing season.
Perform maintenance of gardening tools and equipment, irrigation systems, small machinery etc. (in conjunction with Maintenance workers/grounds keeper)
Perform maintenance of gardening materials and tools.
Perform Interrelated Pest Management techniques.
Coordinate and assist with special projects and outreach efforts as required by Supervisor.
Track and record volunteer activity.
Effectively maintain existing professional relationships with other agencies, organizations and businesses that promote effective communication and facilitate continued programming efforts.
Prepare and submit expense reports.
Prepare and develop content for the program related communications. Provide information as requested to assist with preparation of reports, impact statements, and success stories on program progress and accomplishments for funders, advisory committees, Board and others as necessary.
Maintain communication with constituents and the community through variety of methods such as newsletters, e-mails, electronic technology, internet, social media, website postings and content.
On an occasional basis transports self and transports youth participants on events and field trips.
Professional Improvement - 5%
In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.
Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.
