The University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Medicine is hiring for a Senior Accountant for the Department of Epidemiology & Public Health. The Senior Accountant performs advanced level review and complex analysis of accounting transactions to ensure completeness, accuracy, and conformance with uniform accounting principles and practices. This position will also be responsible for performing all aspects of the HR and payroll transactions for the department, including payroll journals, adjustments, leave payouts, overpays, etc., maintaining up-to-date time and leave, and generating reports and reviewing for accuracy.

Apply knowledge of accounting practice to area of specialty to assure that transactions are properly handled.
Resolve problems that require a working knowledge of accounting principles. Use independent judgment to determine acceptable options.
Monitor budgetary transactions (e.g. payroll, receivables, accounts payable, etc.) on a daily basis. Examine a variety of documents for completeness, internal accuracy and conformance with uniform accounting principles.
Examine and ensure integrity of financial data. Work with PIs, faculty, staff and others to identify potential discrepancies between financial system and department records.
Receive, analyze, adjust and prepare financial reports; prepare and/or review reports to accurately convey results in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
Interpret results of accounting reports to others. Prepare reports, spreadsheets, graphs, charts and related documents to convey accounting information.
Prepare, submit disbursements/deposits; assist senior administrators with other financial matters as needed
May provide leadership to others working in same accounting specialty.
Perform all aspects of the eUMB HR (payroll journals, adjustments, leave payouts, overpays, etc.), generate reports and review for accuracy. Examine new employee employment packet contents for required forms for completeness and signatures. Work with new employees to ensure paperwork is correct and submitted in a timely manner. Calculate overpayments and work with employee/former employees and Payroll Office on recouping the final overpayment amount. Serve as a liaison for payroll and human resources matters.
Download all payroll activity from Raven into IT Works shadow system using the latest versions and web based features of the software program on a monthly basis. Produce meaningful reports in IT Works and HRMS as needed by director/administrator.
Review all payroll ePAFS submitted by business managers for accuracy, recycling ePAFs, changes in funding commitment, etc.; report repeat errors to director/administrator.
Attend payroll meetings; reporting on key points at monthly managers meetings.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration or equivalent combination of formal education/training and experience with a working knowledge of an accounting specialty area.
Experience: 3 years accounting related experience using general acceptable accounting principles. Payroll experience preferred.

Ability to use technology to obtain information, run reports; prepare forecasts and submit reports. Advanced skill in Excel required; experience with eRA Commons, PeopleSoft desirable.

Ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively; must demonstrate professional, ethical, respectful and courteous behavior when interacting with others.
