Preterm birth, defined as birth before 37 weeks of gestation, is the leading cause of neonatal death worldwide. Of those preterm infants that survive, many experience long-term complications including learning and behavioral disabilities. 95% of preterm births cannot be prevented with current therapies and underscores the urgent need for further research to understand the causes of preterm labor. We study the response of the developing human immune system to the different inflammatory causes of preterm birth, and aim to identify new protein or cellular interactions that can prevent the activation of immune cells involved in inflammation. Results from our work will help us design better interventions to protect newborn infants from injury.
The ideal candidate for this position will be (1) interested in human pediatric health and (2) trained in basic laboratory techniques including processing of biological specimens, tissue-culture, nucleic acid extraction, PCR, ELISA, and quantification & purification methods. Technical accuracy, reliability, and a willingness to learn are of the utmost importance.
Specific responsibilities include: • Maintain stocks, reagents, laboratory equipment, perform other duties as assigned. • Extract nucleic acid (RNA and DNA) from biological samples. • Assist with receiving, banking and cataloguing incoming biospecimens. • Processing of biospecimens and performing tissue culture experiments, analyzing experiments by flow cytometry. • Perform calculations, compile and summarize data, keep meticulous records of every experiment. Recognize irregularities and invalid results and troubleshoot experiments accordingly.
Required qualifications: • BA/BS in a biology or chemistry-related science. • One or more years of recent, directly related work experience following degree completion, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred qualifications: • Minimum of one year prior experience working with biological samples • Experience working with human biological samples • Knowledge of scientific equipment (centrifuge, pipettes, ultra-low freezers) • Strong computer skills including the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook • Ability to multi-task and prioritize • Excellent communication skills • Flexible schedule – ability to work evenings and weekends • Meticulous record keeping abilities
Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service.
