Departmental Overview The IST Telecommunications Group designs, installs, and operates the campus voice and data network systems. The group determines standards and best practices for infrastructure development within IST, and promotes compatible standards and best practices across campus IT infrastructure groups. Key offerings include analog and digital voice services, voicemail, cellular (wireless) service, data network connectivity including wi-fi access, host-master services, and project management for building infrastructure projects.
Applies IT concepts to perform complex analysis and take a lead role in the design, specification and installation of distribution and access electronics (switches). Evaluates, tests and deploys new or enhanced electronics and services.
Fulfill complex end user service requests and support installation services as necessary.
Serves as network duty engineer responsible for general network problem determination and resolution during normal business hours.
Troubleshoots complex issues in distribution and access networks and electronics.
Works directly with vendor/manufacturer technical support to isolate and resolve hardware and software issues.
Coordinates all phases of multiple, complex network projects: planning, design, procurement, implementation and documentation.
Consults with users/departments to determine communication needs.
Implements related business processes.
Participates in the development and testing of complex network diagnostic tools and applications.
Identifies and selects training opportunities for professional development.
Participates in cross-functional group discussions, activities and efforts.
Experience in the deployment and maintenance of common campus switching platforms (E.G. Cisco, Juniper, Brocade).
Knowledge of and experience with LAN Technologies (E.G. Spanning tree, LACP, 802.1q).
Knowledge of and experience with TCP/IP Network configuration and technologies (IPv4, OSPF, IPv6, DHCP, DNS).
Experience with Unix based computer systems.
Requires knowledge of professional communications and network concepts in completion of assignments and resolution of issues.
Requires the ability to gather, organize, and analyze data in the completion of a variety of functional assignments.
Has skills necessary to resolve issues using established parameters, creativity and independent judgment, escalating as necessary.
Must be able to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
Background check required.
Thorough understanding of various network hardware platforms, network related protocols and software, and related technical standards critical to the operation of interconnected networks.
In-depth experience with network diagnostic and performance management tools and software.
Thorough knowledge and experience working with network management systems.
Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
