Position overview Design Camp is an annual series of pre-college summer programs offered at NC State University College of Design to high school and middle school students. Design Camp informs students about college study in design and raises awareness of the impact of design in all aspects of our everyday lives.
Having operated for over a quarter of a century, the Design Camp at NC State College of Design has provided the spark and fuel of inspiration for thousands of aspiring designers, including some who have gone on to national and international success in their field. Design Camp changes the lives of not only its campers but has proved to be a wonderful, life changing experience for hundreds of College of Design faculty, staff and students who have worked for the program over the years.
Design Camp Students work with camp instructors and teaching assistants on projects involving disciplines offered at the college- Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Industrial Design, Art & Design, and Graphic Design.
Camp projects developed in response to a different theme each year, challenge students to explore their creativity and critical- thinking skills while pushing them to try a range of techniques and media. In addition to studio projects, students will attend special presentations and participate in creative group challenges.
Primary Purpose of Position Instructors are responsible for teaching campers in one studio for one or more weeks of camp. Candidates may be hired to teach Middle School Day Camp (Rising 6th-8th grades), High School Day Camp (Rising 9th – 11th grades), or High School Residential Camp (Rising 11th and 12th grades). Middle School Day Camp instructors will have two TAs to support them during studio time and help with some preparation. High School Day and High School Residential instructors will have one TA.
Instructors will follow the Design Camp curriculum guidelines and develop age appropriate projects that align with this years Design Camp theme.
Instructors for Design Day and Residential Camp will develop a one-day camp project that will be taught to a different group of campers each day
Instructors for Middle School Day Camp will develop a range of projects for one group of campers that they will work with every day Monday- Friday
Instructors will be required to complete the following training throughout the Spring Semester. Three training sessions will be held spring of 2019 for instructors.
*Please note-All first time instructors must attend an information session on either January 14 or 15 in Brooks 212A at 6PM
Instructors will receive training on
Camper safety and cultural awareness
A mini- practicum experience is provided and required for new hires.
Work Schedule Varies according to camp selected. Approximately 8:30am-5:00pm during the camp week(s) worked. Mandatory Spring Meetings and trainings are required. Dates to be announced in January. Camp Prep Day is the day before each camp session begins. Instructors are required to work Prep Day and ensure all studio prep is complete before the start of camp.

Experience and demonstrated success planning and implementing design projects, experience and or interest in working with high school and middle school students
Demonstrated design skills, understanding of design thinking and process and teaching/leadership experience required
Enthusiasm for education and teaching are a must
Participation in training is mandatory
Must have excellent organizational, writing and communication skills
Must be able to maintain positive professional relationships among Design Camp colleagues and working with students
Must be willing and able to support fellow staff and collaborate as a team player
Mini practicum in school visit required for all new hires (Spring)
