This position will support cutting edge brain imaging research at the Penn Image Computing and Science Laboratory (picsl.upenn.edu) and the Penn Memory Center (pennmemorycenter.org). The research specialist will support an NIH grant to build a detailed three-dimensional map of early brain changes that occur in Alzheimer’s disease and related neurodegenerative diseases. This project involves a combination of postmortem and in vivo brain imaging.
The primary focus of the position is to acquire, organize and analyze imaging data from postmortem human brain specimens. This involves preparing specimens, operating the MRI scanner, organizing imaging data on Linux-based computer system, and interfacing with other laboratories involved in this project. The secondary focus of the position is to support data analysis. This aspect will be tailored to the applicant’s strengths. For example, if your strengths are in biology, the position may involve annotation of anatomical structures in images; and if your strengths are computational, it may involve development of Python code and Linux shell scripts for automated data analysis.
The position requires being able to work a few evenings per month (e.g., from noon to 8pm) and occasional weekends, based on the MRI scanner availability.
