JOB SUMMARY: Participate in the preparation and publication of outstanding manuscripts. Independently carry out and design highly sophisticated and independent experiments. Mentor and train graduate students and post doctoral fellow in developing their research projects. Ideal candidate would have strengths in computer programming or data science with a degree in statistical genetics, biomedical informatics, epidemiology, or a related field to work on electronic health record-based genetic studies in an academic research setting. The job entails working with some of the largest biomedical data sets ever put together. Responsibilities include phenotype development and validation using de-identified medical records, with the ultimate goal of understanding how environmental and genetic variation impacts human health and disease. Required skills include programming (largely in scripting languages), working with linux- and cloud-based environments, and an understanding of epidemiological and statistical methods in large data sets. A biological background or experience in environmental or genetic research is preferred. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required to assist with manuscript development. Experience with working with large data sets using python, R, and/or Perl is preferred as well as familiarity with the Jupyter platform. Tools and analyses developed through our team have the potential to change treatments and improve lives. Experience in leadership and mentorship would be valuable to this position
Independently oversee research projects and perform near to totally independent research.
Supervise, plan, design and implement research projects
Establish highly complex protocol(s); define data collection, evaluation and analysis procedures
Exercise discretion and independent judgment to develop methods and procedures for operation of complex scientific equipment
Supervise set-up and operation of various scientific experiments involving complex apparatus and equipment
Contribute to research so as to merit serving as author or co-author on research publications, etc.
Assists PI in manuscript preparation for scientific journals.
Assist principal investigator in writing research grants and contract proposals
Present research findings as needed
Responsible for plan and coordination of literature and library searches and data collection programs
Develop reports of results, graphs, charts, tables, etc. of research findings
Supervise writing, reviewing and editing of various materials for publication
Provide supervisory responsibility to staff
Train and supervise technical staff, medical and graduate students
Provide technical guidance to students, pos-doctoral fellows and faculty as required
Mentor and teach graduate students, junior staff scientist and post doctoral fellows in developing their projects and on specific techniques and protocols.
May provide budget responsibility
Make recommendations to principal investigator regarding staff, supply and equipment needs for research projects
May monitor expenditures of funds
Maintain open communication between department and others
Open contact as needed with principal investigator, collaborating professionals, Purchasing, Human Resource Services, Space and Facilities Planning, asset management personnel, Environmental Health and Safety, Institutional Review Board staff, administrative staff relating to budget capabilities
Contact as required with sponsoring agencies and/or cooperating facilities (e.g. V.A.), collaborating professionals and vendors
