The University of Pittsburgh is seeking a qualified Research Specialist for the Department of Pharmacology. The Research Specialist IV will be responsible for a small research laboratory conducting biochemical studies in vitro and molecular/cellular studies in mammalian cultured cells and mice. The incumbent will also be responsible for maintaining a transgenic mouse colony (i.e. breeding, genotyping, and sample collection) and performing complex mouse surgeries and post-surgical care. Extensive experience in basic molecular/cellular biology protocols and microscopy techniques is required. The Research Specialist will conduct experimental projects and will be responsible for the overall function of the laboratory (maintain laboratory equipment and computers, manage budget and train/supervise lab members.)
M.Sc. in life sciences required and at least 5 years of relevant laboratory experience. Extensive or significant related experience may be considered in lieu of education. Must have relevant experience working with and managing transgenic mouse colonies (tail DNA preps, PCR genotyping, husbandry, colony management). Must be proficient in cell culture and routine molecular and cell biology techniques (plasmid preps, subcloning, transfections, Western blotting and fluorescence microscopy). Experience as a laboratory manager in charge of daily lab routines. Must be able to manage large mouse colony and perform challenging animal surgery. Must be proficient in cell culture and routine molecular and cell biology techniques. Experience as research assistant in a laboratory environment.
