Job Description Summary
The Associate Chaplain for Muslim Life at Wake Forest provides leadership and oversight of support services and programming that responds to the cultural and social adjustment of Muslim students on campus. Through advocacy, development, spiritual support, and coordination of cultural, educational and social programs and activities, Muslim Life at Wake Forest seeks to create a safe environment that promotes a rich cross-cultural experience for the entire campus community. The Associate Chaplain for Muslim Life encourages Muslims and non-Muslims to identify common values and negotiate differences in public life.
The primary tasks of this position focus on engaging and providing support to Muslim students, faculty, and staff, initiating and promoting a wide-range of interfaith programs, and assisting as needed with Office of the Chaplain programming and on-call responsibilities.
Coordinate Friday prayer services and holy day observances on campus, and engagements with area mosques. Collaborations with faculty and staff to arrange Muslim speakers and cultural groups to visit campus.
Provide coaching, advising, and spiritual support to individual students, student groups and organizations and serve as advocate for the Muslim student community by examining policies, procedures and practices and making recommendations for changes to ensure cross-cultural adjustment and retention. Provide primary oversight of organizing religious functions.
Serve as a member of the Office of the Chaplain on-call rotation.
Collaborate with, and provide support and guidance to, student religious life and cultural groups on campus. Serve as an advisor to the Muslim Student Association (MSA), and other groups as needed.
Foster multi-faith understanding by initiating, coordinating and promoting a variety of multi-faith events such as service-learning projects, study groups, panel discussions, alternative spring break trips, meals, and holy day observances.
Assist undergraduate, graduate, and professional school students in integrating their intellectual lives, and commitments to peace and social justice, with their spiritual formation by creating opportunities for theological reflection, spiritual conversation, and vocational discernment.
Oversee management of the Muslim Student Lounge including scheduling, maintenance, and upgrades.
Prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress and/or adverse trends for appropriate recommendations.
Develop and oversee implementation of an effective communication strategy for Muslim life including, but not limited to, print material and websites that describe and promote interest in activities, programs and services sponsored by the Office of the Chaplain.
Serve on University and division-wide committees and groups that monitor issues related to Muslim related matters.
Provide training/educational outreach to the University at large.
Support the professional development of our Muslim students.
Represent Wake Forest University at state and regional levels of Muslim-related organizations.
Collaborate with University Advancement to support Muslim life at Wake Forest.
Collaborate with the Office of Alumni Engagement to connect with Muslim alumni and the Muslim Alumni Association.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Bachelor's degree required – preferably in a closely-related field or the liberal arts.
Degree required in a program recognized as a Master of Divinity equivalent by the Association of Theological Schools with a focus area of study in Islamic studies.
Graduate Certificate in Islamic Chaplaincy.
Strong commitment to and understanding of the needs and concerns of Muslim students, faculty, and staff.
Ability to work with and meet the needs of a diverse Muslim population at Wake Forest.
Ability to work with and meet the needs of a diverse American Muslim community.
Ability to work in a multi-faith and ecumenical environment and engage with individuals from a variety of theological/ideological/spiritual perspectives.
Excellent writing, verbal and interpersonal skills as well as crisis management skills with a proven ability to work in a team environment. Outstanding organizational skills with ability to handle multiple projects and priorities.
Creativity in imagining new initiatives and/or new ways of pursuing existing goals.
Basic unit in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) preferred.
1-3 years of relevant experience preferred.
Works with minimal supervision.
Reports to the University Chaplain.
Responsible for own work.
