The Institute of Marine Sciences [https://ims.ucsc.edu/] at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an ongoing pool of Fisheries Specialists who may be appointed to support research projects conducted in the UCSC-NOAA Fisheries Collaborative Program at the Institute of Marine Sciences. The program conducts research for the conservation and management of California's living marine resources, which encompasses areas of research such as, but not limited to fisheries population dynamics, climate impacts on marine resources, coastal ecology, fish movement/migration patterns, predator-prey relationships, fisheries habitat utilization, genetics, and physical/biological oceanography.
Under the direction of the program's Deputy Director and a designated NOAA Science Advisor, the Fisheries Specialists will contribute technical skills to make scientific and scholarly contributions to the various research projects by conducting comprehensive field/laboratory studies, implementing safe field/laboratory practices, assisting with research project coordination, fostering collaborative relationships with other scientists and agencies, managing and analyzing datasets, and contributing to peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and/or agency reports.
Applicants with experience in any of the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply: field or laboratory-based investigative fisheries research (including project management); managing and/or analyzing large datasets; familiarity with habitat assessment protocols; development and use of innovative technologies to solve complex natural resource management problems; experience with programming, modeling, and/or coding for natural resources science-related projects; experience using Geographical Information System (GIS); and/or coordinating and implementing safety protocols.
SALARY Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Bachelor's degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in Fisheries, Ocean Sciences, Environmental Resource Management, Environmental Studies, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Biology, Marine Sciences, Hydrology, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or related field at the time of application.
Experience contributing to field or laboratory studies in the areas of fisheries biology, natural resource management, marine science, zoology or other related field (experience can be obtained while completing Bachelor's degree).
DURATION OF POSITION Initial appointments are typically full-time for a minimum period of one-year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.
