Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey is seeking a Media Relations Specialist for the Department of Marketing and Communications at the New Jersey Medical School. Under the direction of the Director of Marketing and Communications, the media relations specialist will lead media relations and content marketing efforts across the NJMS digital and print platforms. The primary purpose of this role is to support the development and implementation of strategic media relations opportunities that highlight NJMS and its four mission areas (education, research, patient care, and community service). This will be accomplished through the planning of media relations activities and content development strategies such as: drafting press releases, developing proactive media pitches/advisories, cultivating positive relationships with members of the media, serving as the primary point of contact for media requests, and creating content for NJMS print and digital platforms.
Coordinates and drafts press releases to pitch to media.
Manages media contact database.
Staffs and manages telephone and on-camera media interviews.
Liaises with media relations and PR/communications colleagues throughout RBHS/RU to promote and raise awareness of NJMS news.
Collaborates with NJMS MarComm team members to optimize and deliver accurate, coordinated and timely content.
Provides counsel and media relations training to colleagues.
Cultivates and manages relationships with journalists and members of the media.
Proactively liaises with academic departments, administrative offices, students, and other members of the NJMS community to develop original stories for internal/external marcomm opportunities.
Synthesizes raw data/research into public-facing story ideas.
Monitors news cycle and trends in main stream media, academic medicine, and healthcare to identify opportunities to promote NJMS faculty/staff/students.
Serves as the primary point of contact for NJMS freelance copywriters.
Work with the NJMS Director of Marketing and Communications on the development and implementation of multi-channel communications and content marketing plans to achieve internal client's campaign-specific goals.
Produces monthly media relations activities and content reports.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, public relations, journalism or a related discipline plus at least three (3) years of related experience in an academic, agency, or business setting required.
Exceptional copywriting/copy editing skills.
Experience with news media and niche academic/medical/research media and publications.
Additional related experience may be substituted for the degree on a year-for-year basis.

Proven project management and organizational skills.
Strong understanding of marketing communication and public/media relations principles.
Exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate, influence, and lead.
