The Data Science (DS) Specialist at the IQSS Data Science Services is responsible for providing consulting and collaboration services focused on statistics and programming, as well as software training, to researchers, including faculty, post-docs, visiting scholars, graduate, and undergraduate students. Specifically, the DS Specialist will help researchers select suitable statistical methods, solve analytical problems, refine their study design, employ appropriate data management practices, develop code, and select appropriate software packages. Candidates should have a strong background in statistical modeling and programming. A major focus of the DS Specialist will be to develop training materials on a variety of research tools, including statistical software packages (e.g., R, Python, Stata), and teach these materials in regular small-group training sessions. To be pro-active, the DS Specialist must maintain an awareness of new developments in the statistical literature, research technology literature, and in computing software. The DS Specialist will contribute to promoting the consulting, collaboration, and training services offered by Data Science Services.
The Institute for Quantitative Social Science (IQSS) is an interfaculty initiative that helps social scientists leverage advances in computing technology, quantitative methodology, and behavioral research – toward the goal of understanding and solving some of the greatest problems that affect human societies. Within IQSS, Data Science Services is one of the leading research support units at Harvard. The team offers consulting and collaboration on publication research issues that fall broadly in the following categories: (i) data analysis and programming, (ii) organization, secure storage, and sharing of data, (iii) research project planning. This is a term appointment through 6/30/2020, with the possibility of renewal based on funding and performance.

Union: 00 - Non Union, Exempt or Temporary
MA or MS in a field of social/natural science 2+ years in statistical modeling Knowledge or experience with a programming language (e.g. Stata, R, Python, SAS, MatLab, etc). Experience developing training materials and delivering software training in an academic or research setting
PhD in a field of social/natural science preferred Experience with cluster and/or cloud computing Intermediate to advanced knowledge of a programming language Experience building a statistical package (e.g., R, Python) or software application Excellent written and spoken communication skills
