UW Medicine Advancement has an outstanding opportunity for a Senior Director for Advancement Engagement and Communications.The Senior Director is responsible for leading and integrating the functions that build and enhance the reputation of UW Medicine. The Senior Director will focus most of their effort on strengthening the relationships with donors, friends, volunteers, alumni and the general public in a direct effort to increase philanthropic support for UW Medicine, from philanthropy to volunteerism. To this end, the Senior Director will partner with UW Medicine Advancement VP/CAO/AVPs, the Chief Communications Officer of UW Medicine and several leaders in that department, the CEO/Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean of the School of Medicine, University and University Advancement leaders, academic leaders, volunteers, and other advancement staff to plan, administer, and direct the communications and special events activities that support fundraising and in conjunction with current and future fundraising Campaigns. RESPONSIBILITIESLeading a collaborative and strategically integrated effort to communicate and enhance the value of UW Medicine's opportunities that, when leveraged, will accelerate medical discovery, improve the care of patients in the Puget Sound, throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond, and prepare the brightest minds to serve as the care providers and medical researchers of the future. Leading the efforts of the UW Medicine Advancement Communications team to develop strategic, donor-centric communications to help ensure overall fundraising and Campaign success. Providing strategic direction and leadership for the overall direction of UW Medicine's special events, with the goal of creating engaging, inspiring and meaningful events that cultivate and steward donors and prospective donors that showcase the impact of philanthropic giving at UW Medicine. Assisting in the creation, dissemination and adaptation of UW Medicine Advancement's brand and messaging platform for current and future Campaigns and key priorities. Developing and leading a successful advancement marketing and communications program that incorporates innovative and measurable strategies and tactics across multiple programs and functions. Fostering a successful partnership with UW Medicine Strategic Marketing & Communications by ensuring open and transparent communication in regards to advancement communications priorities and strategy. Collaborating and communicating with colleagues in University Advancement and University Marketing and Communications about UW Medicine Advancement communications and maximizing opportunities for partnership. Fostering a culture of collaboration and open communication across functions and teams at UW Medicine Advancement in order to support and inform one another's work, as well as to support the work and goals of the fundraising teams. Ensuring UW Medicine Advancement's personnel and operating monies for communications and special events are maximized in support of the department's strategic goals. Building and maintaining a fully integrated, highly-efficient team in order to best support the communications and special events needs of UW Medicine Advancement. CommunicationsProvide leadership and oversight of the UW Medicine Advancement Communications team that is responsible for outreach activities/projects in support of alumni/fundraising communications (print/online), message development, and overall fundraising success. Work with UW and UW Medicine colleagues to ensure that advancement and alumni materials comply with applicable brand standards -- in both message and design. Current communication projects include but are not limited to: UW Medicine magazine (produced twice per year under the leadership of its editor and creative team leaders, all of whom are on the UW Medicine Advancement Communications team); electronic newsletters (3 versions, 6x/year), creative for online giving campaigns; the production of a consolidated website; and design/editorial support for donor proposals, Alumni programs, Donor Relations, Annual Philanthropy and others. The Advancement Communications team will also provide strategic partnership and design support to the Special Events team. Special EventsWorking closely with the Director for Special Events, the Senior Director will provide leadership and oversight for the team that implements UW Medicine Advancement and UW Medicine Alumni special events -- 50+ events each year that range from highly-visible fundraising events to major gift cultivation and stewardship events. While reinforcing UW Medicine's mission, ensure that special events directly support and generate visibility for fundraising priorities, including facilitating conversations around major and principal gifts. When appropriate, work to identify and engage corporate and individual underwriters. Work with the Director of Alumni Relations to create synergy between the alumni and advancement programs. StrategySet and oversee the implementation of the strategic marketing and communications direction for UW Medicine Advancement's priorities and fundraising initiatives. In partnership with UW Medicine Advancement's leadership, create and set communications and events strategies and tactics for a multiyear, multi-faceted approach to fundraising. Represent UW Medicine Advancement on UW Medicine, University Advancement, UW Marketing and Communications Executive Council, and other University wide marketing and communications committees, as well as with partner organizations. Keep up to date with latest trends in Advancement marketing and communications; implementing new strategic approaches to more effectively communicate with donors and other stakeholders. Understand and apply measurement goals to illuminate market impact to inform strategies. LEAD RESPONSIBILITIESThis position works collaboratively with UW Medicine Advancement leadership and with the Chief Communications Officer as the lead strategist for UW Medicine Advancement's special events and communications. This position is responsible for the integration of those high- functioning, critical and high-profile events and communications that support all fundraising activity. This position is responsible for the overall assignment, review, and approval of work, providing training and overall direction for work of assigned staff on the UW Medicine Advancement Communications team and the Special Events team. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIESThis position supervises a diverse team of programmatic staff consisting of 11 professionals, of which 3 are direct reports. In this capacity, this position is responsible for hiring, performance appraisals, promotions/reclassifications, salary adjustments, disciplinary actions and/or handling complaints/grievances. QUALIFICATIONSBachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Seven or more years of progressively responsible experience in non-profit or institutional advancement, marketing and public relations, special events or a related field with particular expertise in communications.Experience in digital marketing and website best practices.Knowledge and experience with fundraising principles as well as marketing principles and industry trends.
