As the International Laboratory for Earth System Prediction (iHESP) is being established, we are recruiting an assistant research scientist in high-resolution climate and Earth system modeling and analysis. The successful candidate will be a part of the research team of iHESP, consisting of scientists from Texas A&M University (TAMU), the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the Qingdao National Laboratory for Marine Science and Technology (QNLM), engaging in cutting-edge research in high-resolution Earth system modeling and prediction. It is expected that the successful candidate will play a key role in the success of the iHESP project.
Required Education and Experience:
Ph.D. in Oceanography, Atmospheric Sciences, Climate Dynamics or related fields
Relevant professional experience in Physical Oceanography, Dynamic Meteorology, Climate Dynamics or related fields
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Advanced knowledge about numerical methods in ocean, atmosphere, and Earth system modeling.
Advanced programming experience, including code development and shell scripting, and ability to understand and make modifications to complex climate and Earth system models.
Expertise in high-resolution climate data analysis and statistics.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills
Capable of working collaboratively in a team environment
Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others
Other Requirements or Other Factors:
Ability to travel internationally
Preferred Education and Experience:
Ph.D. in Oceanography, Atmospheric Sciences, Climate Dynamics or related fields, specializing in ocean, atmosphere and climate modeling and prediction
Minimum of 5 year research experience in Physical Oceanography, Dynamic Meteorology, Climate Dynamics or related fields
Established publication record and demonstrated skills in analyzing high-resolution climate datasets
Research experience in modeling and analyzing multiscale oceanic and atmospheric processes and their interactions
Experience in using global high-resolution Earth System models, particularly the Community Earth System Model (CESM) developed by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), and/or regional atmosphere and ocean models, such as the Weather Research & Forecast model (WRF) and Regional Ocean Modeling Systems (ROMS)
Independent research ability in climate modeling and prediction
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge about the computer code and numerical algorithms used NCAR CESM, and/or WRF and ROMS.
Programming skills in Fortran, C/C++, Matlab and/or Python
Familiar with the use of High-Performance Computer systems and parallel programing.
Research to be performed includes but not limited to: 1) Carry out independent research in Earth system model development and improvement; 2) Help design and configure high resolution Earth System model simulations and prediction experiments on high performance computing systems to study weather and climate extremes, such as tropical cyclones and hurricanes, atmospheric rivers and mesoscale air-sea interactions; 3) Develop diagnostics and metrics for analyzing high-resolution observed and simulated datasets; 4) Write scientific papers for journal publications.
Lead the effort in preparing project reports and research proposals.
Perform other duties, such as working with postdocs and graduate students and participating and organizing workshops and meetings, as assigned. Other duties as assigned.
