PROGRAMDESCRIPTION: Educational Talent Search is a federally funded program designed to identify individuals from twelve (12) to twenty-seven (27) years old who are low-income and potential first generation college students. The main objective of the program is to encourage participants to complete high school and continue education at the post-secondary level.
POSITIONSUMMARY: The Educational Advising Specialist assists the programs Associate Director in the overall implementation of the project, overseeing the day-to-day operations of ETS, including developing and implementing summer program services and activities, administering, and supervising staff. The Educational Advising Specialist also serves as the project's chief liaison to the target schools, and the target area's communities. Develops ETS students' advising and workshop schedule. Develops relationships between College Advisors and ETS Students.
ESSENTIALDUTIESANDRESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
Use independent judgment and discretion in developing and implementing an Outreach and Recruitment Plan that encompasses making presentations to various local organizations to include class presentations, parent meetings and community organization to reach target population, organizing tables at local community activities to disseminate information related to Education Talent Search (ETS), and by any other acceptable means, recruit and maintain a waiting list of candidates.
The Educational Advising Specialist is expected to continuously assess, revise and/or modify plan and provide solutions in order to achieve program goal.
Provide leadership to federally funded student staff and program participants.
Provide and oversee Educational Talent Search services to program participants to include academic counseling; college advising; enrichment workshops; motivate students to apply to college.
Hire and supervise student staff.
Supervise the documentation of student eligibility. Maintain accurate and up-to-date files on each student and on program activities.
Must remain current with College and University admission requirements.
Handle sensitive and/or confidential documents and information where judgement and discretion are essential.
Ensure confidentiality of all program records and other sensitive information.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Attend workshops, conference as deemed necessary.
Promotes and maintains an atmosphere of excellent internal and external customer service.

Ability and skill to work in a support role with migrant and seasonal agricultural communities, minority, low-income candidates using tact, diplomacy and sensitivity. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals, community agencies, universities and parents. Ability to communicate and work intimately within a culturally diverse setting. Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements. Ability to work independently and to take direction effectively. Ability to prepare oral and written reports and comments that are clear, comprehensive, and concise. Proficiency in the use of basic computer systems, software, and Internet skills.
Minimum Qualifications: Education and Experience: BA degree in counseling, psychology, education, guidance, student support services, Adult Education or related fields AND Experience working with migrant, and Spanish-speaking communities.
Specialized Skills: Special Condition (s) of Employment: Must be willing and able to work evenings and weekends and to travel in and out-of-state as deemed necessary to provide services to participants and attend professional development opportunities. Position will require travel between campus offices and off-campus location. Must have own transportation, valid drivers license, and auto insurance. Demonstrated experience that clearly provides evidence of the knowledge and skills required to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements identified above are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required. Must complete web-based training in Defensive Driving and continue to meet the established driving standards as a condition of employment.
Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the CSUMB Vision Statement and the core values of mutual respect, collaboration and service orientation, multiculturalism and diversity, community service and institutional excellence. Experience working with a diverse and multicultural population and performing community services; demonstrated technical literacy.
Special Conditions of Employment: The person holding this position is considered a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Compensation and Benefits: The monthly salary is: $4,160 (11 month pay schedule). This is an exempt position and as such is not eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Benefits include medical, dental, vision and life insurance benefits, contributory retirement plan, TSA (403b), 13 paid holidays per year and other benefits.
