UCSD Health Sciences is a $1 billion dollar plus organization encompassing 19 academic departments (17 clinical, 2 basic sciences), 2 pre-academic/hospital departments, 2 professional schools (School of Medicine and Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences), 2 hospitals, and various other programs and units all dedicated towards fulfilling the Health Sciences missions. The Nikon Imaging Center is a new facility created to improve the access of UC San Diego researchers to cutting-edge microscopy.
The NIC houses five brand-new microscopes for performing, widefield, point-scanning and field-scanning confocal, TIRF, and super-resolution imaging. The center can be accessed by users from any Division at UC San Diego, and our mission is to work with any interested researcher to ensure that they have support from the inception of an imaging project through to the publication of their final data.
The Senior Image Data Analyst will be the first employee of the Image Data Analysis Center (IDAC). The incumbent will be essential for advancing image analysis across the entire UC San Diego campus. We are looking for an experienced data scientist who can both use commercial image processing software and design custom analysis routines using either Matlab or open-source libraries.
The Senior Image Data Analyst will also be key in developing strategies for improving the storage and archiving of data generated in the Nikon Imaging Center and the Microscopy Core in the Center for Neurosciences. Additionally, the Senior Image Data Analyst will collaborate with imaging users and the Halicioglu Data Science Institute to develop deep learning/neural networks for analyzing large datasets and developing new means for deepening our ability to extract data value from existing workflows.
The Senior Image Data Analyst will receive direction from Professors Samara Reck-Peterson in Cellular and Molecular Medicine and Jing Zhang, in Pharmacology and report to the Director of the Nikon Imaging Center. However the incumbent will work with the directors of all UC San Diego imaging cores to consult on imaging projects and to design microscopy workflows to ensure that data is acquired that will be optimal for the desired downstream analysis. The Senior Image Data Analyst will also be expected to keep abreast of the latest developments in the field and evaluate new techniques for applying cutting-edge analysis techniques and improving image resolution and/or quantitation.
The Senior Image Data Analyst will conduct workshops and seminars for students, staff, and faculty to introduce topics in image processing, image analysis, data hygiene, and statistics. He/she should therefore have excellent working knowledge of the commonly used open-source software that is available for this purpose. To aid in this aim, he/she will work with the director of the Nikon Imaging Center to produce short tutorial videos and/or worksheets that will be disseminated to users.
Finally, the Senior Image Data Analyst will help prepare grants and write manuscripts with users who need assistance with image data analysis support.
Bachelor's Degree in related area; and/or equivalent experience/training.
A minimum of seven (7+) or more years of relevant experience.
Expert knowledge of microscopy techniques and modalities.
Experience with both using commercial image processing software and designing custom analysis routines using either Matlab or open-source libraries.
Highly skilled in statistical analysis, database management and systems programming.
Proven ability to develop procedures for data storage, image integrity, and data traceability. Ensure the integrity of imaging research studies done across all of UC San Diego.
Highly skilled in analysis and consultation at all levels, internal and external to the organization. Including principal investigators, postdoctoral scholars, and imaging core directors.
Ability to serve as senior imaging analyst/point of integration across the campus for all users of microscopy resources. Ability will help to bring the resources of the new Halicioglu Data Science Institute to users across campus.
Advanced ability to write bespoke image analysis routines.
