Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Bioeconomy Institute (BEI) at Iowa State University is seeking an Assistant Scientist III. The BEI is a research institute which seeks to advance the use of biorenewable resources for the production of chemicals, fuels, materials and energy. The purpose of this position is to conduct and support research, development of appropriate methodologies and support activities related to renewable energy resources and technologies. The incumbent will conduct research in characterization and utilization of products derived from thermochemical processing of biomass. This individual will provide analytical instrumentation application and troubleshooting expertise to students. This position requires supervision of up to 3 undergraduate assistants. The person in this position is expected to possess a thorough understanding of laboratory practices. The Assistant Scientist III will assist in the development of research programs with faculty and staff working in thermochemical processing. This position requires the ability to prepare manuscripts, research proposals and reports in conjunction with principal investigators. This individual will present at technical conferences and workshops.
The successful candidate must possess a thorough understanding of laboratory practices; ensure that all laboratory equipment is used correctly and is properly maintained; and that all applicable test procedures are in compliance with determined methodology, both those developed in-house and those established by entities such as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). The candidate must also ensure that all personnel are familiar with and observe laboratory policies, procedures, and applicable precautionary safety measures.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree and 3 years of related experience; or a Ph.D. or other professional degree and related experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Experience with written and oral communication through scientific journal authorship or co-authorship, conference presentations and technical report writing. Experience with experimental design, data analysis and development of novel analytical methods. Experience with validation, troubleshooting and development of applications for complex analytical instrumentation. Experience with supervisory responsibility in a laboratory setting. Experience requiring demonstrated knowledge of thermochemical conversion processes and products, including biochar and bio-oil.
