Advertised Summary Job Description: The Division of General Medicine is seeking a Programmer for the Patient Safety Research Program, which focuses on applying rigorous methods to measure medical errors and evaluate the impact of patient safety interventions. Leveraging Health IT, we conduct federally funded and hospital-supported research projects to test solutions that are replicable, scalable, and make a real difference in improving patient care. We are seeking a Programmer to extract, manage, analyze, and visualize data for research projects conducted by the Patient Safety Research Program. The Programmer will work under the supervision of the Columbia University/NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Chief Patient Safety Officer, and the Patient Safety Research Program Director. The Programmer will interact with investigators and biostatisticians at Columbia and collaborating sites. Training and one-on-one mentoring will be provided by Senior Programmers with extensive Health IT experience. The Programmer will have the opportunity to participate in important research projects aimed at improving patient safety, as well as co-author peer-reviewed publications related to this research.
The Programmer will perform program queries for data extraction from various clinical databases. Manage and analyze large data sets. Generate meaningful reports and summaries from the data. Develop end-to-end solutions to support real-time evaluation of quality initiatives. Participate in preparation of presentations and publications. Performs additional responsibilities as needed.
General Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science/Engineering, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or related field, plus at least four years of related research and programming experience.
Additional Specific Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree in biostatistics, statistics or public health with emphasis on biostatistics and/or epidemiology would substitute for experience. Ability to independently program and perform statistical analysis in SAS required, in addition to familiarity with MS Office applications. Knowledge of other statistical packages (e.g., Sudaan, genetics packages), longitudinal data analysis, and/or website programming a plus. Must possess good organizational, interpersonal, quantitative and writing skills. Must be able to communicate effectively with investigators and other staff. Must be able to function semi-autonomously.
Preferred Qualifications: Familiarity with scripting languages, such as Python or Ruby. Knowledge of Web Development languages (HTML, CSS, JS), APIs, and web services (SOAP, REST). Experience with CIS and EHR systems.
