Bioinformatics Specialist UCSF Mission Bay Campus Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics
The Madhani group at UCSF (madhanilab.ucsf.edu and @hitenmadhani) is recruiting a highly motivated, curious and energetic individual with experience in computation (Bash/Python/R) and knowledge/interest in bioinformatics for a Junior, Assistant, Associate, or Full Specialist position. The laboratory is in Genentech Hall and specializes in studies of the regulation of gene expression aimed at new fundamental understanding of cells as well as improving human health. The laboratory is also affiliated with the Chan-Zuckerberg Biohub (czbiohub.org/investigators/) and there will be opportunities to interface with software engineers there. After being trained in the requisite packages and pipelines, individuals will use, support, and further develop existing bioinformatics pipelines to analyze high-throughput sequencing and proteomics data produced in the laboratory. Opportunities for independent software development will be available. The position is especially well-suited for recent graduates with computational/engineering backgrounds to receive training in computational biology and bioinformatics to better position themselves for opportunities in this area. A two-year commitment is required. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the applicant’s experience and training.
The individual will work collaboratively with members of the laboratory to analyze large datasets aimed at understanding mechanisms of signal transduction as well as RNA- and chromatin-based regulation in cells. Data types produced by the laboratory include CRISPR screens, whole genome sequencing, RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, bisulfite-seq, and CLIP-seq. In addition, there will be opportunities to teach and mentor graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in the use of computational tools and to attend scientific seminars and meetings.
Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and will not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period.
B.S. in computer science, engineering, physics, molecular biology, or related field to be appointed at the Junior rank.
Master’s degree in computer science, engineering, physics, molecular biology, or related field or five to ten years of research experience to be appointed at the Assistant rank or Associate rank.
Ph.D. degree in computer science, engineering, physics, molecular biology, or related field to be appointed at the Full rank.
Requirements necessary at the time of appointment.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Strong interest in working with biologists.
Demonstrable skills in Bash, Python and R.
Strong interest in fundamental biology and/or human health.
