Patients in the Cardiac Cath Lab are cared for by a multidisciplinary team including Cath Lab Registered Nurses, Cardiovascular Techs, Registered Radiology Techs and a Cardiologist. Patients require continuous cardiac monitoring, frequent physician, nursing and ancillary service intervention, and other specialized treatment and/or procedures such as intubation, mechanical ventilation, hemodynamic monitoring, aortic balloon pumps, pericardicentesis, transfusion of blood products, insertion of permanent and temporary pacemakers, cardioversion, defibrillation, pain management, sedation and titration of intravenous medications including vasoactive agents, cardiac agents, anticoagulants, and anti\u00adplatelet agents.The OHSU registered nurse (RN) provides compassionate, evidence-based, and efficient care to individuals, families, communities and patient populations. The RN\u2019s care delivery is consistent with the Oregon Nurse Practice Act, the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, and the ANA Code of Ethics and meets the standards/expectations of a Professional Practice Model. In that model, the RN demonstrates the professional role obligations of scientist, leader, practitioner, and knowledge transferor. The Cath Lab Registered Nurse primary responsibility is to provide direct and indirect professional Nursing care for patients undergoing procedures in the Cardiac Cath Lab. Additional responsibility of Monitoring cases, scrubbing cases, Unit base committees, assist with Supply and demand, Quality Improvement and all other talents that are part of the full success of the Cardiac Cath Team.
The Cardiac Cath Registered Nurse works in a multi-disciplinary environment. Performing services for Infant to Geriatrics that include Coronary, Valve, Arrhythmia, Congenital, Transplant and Heart failure procedures. The team includes Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Hospital Administration and auxiliary support. Each discipline is required to perform duties and responsibilities of their specialty and support all other specialties on the team to provide high quality care, compliance, innovation and implementation. Assignment includes EP/CATH procedures, 6 procedure labs, inpatient, day patient, outpatient workflows, and two work sites (Marquam Hill campus and Center for Health and Healing 2).
The department is open Monday through Friday from 06:45 to 16:00 for routine and emergent cases and an on-call team is available 7 days a week for all cases after routine hours of operation. Cath staff take call, divided among all staff, from 18:00 to 07:30, Monday through Friday; all hours on weekends, including holidays.
Extensive patient contact. The Potential for exposure to communicable diseases, radiation, body fluids on a daily basis.RN is required to wear lead apron (up to 22 lbs) for the majority of the day when involved in procedure.
