The Director reports to the Vice President for Administration and is responsible for the development of risk management policies and practices leading toward the protection of University assets, the limitation of liability, the safety and security of the University Community and the continuity of all University functions, all in response to a wide range of loss exposures that are associated with a university. The Director will take a leadership role in training programs and periodic testing of programs. The Director will take a proactive role as a consultative resource to all areas of the University as they work to manage the risks in their area. The Director will also work closely with the Vice President for Administration, the Chief Financial Officer, and the University's insurance broker to provide appropriate insurance coverage. The Director is accountable for (1) creation and implementation of an integrated risk framework; (2) identification and assessment of possible risks throughout the university; (3) development of plans to mitigate risk in a manner consistent with Gonzaga's mission and strategic plan; and (4) monitoring and reporting on the progress of risk mitigation activities.
College degree in business administration or a field that has relevance to the essential functions of the position. Additional training or educational programs in insurance and risk management that demonstrate and understanding of the principles and practices relating to risk management. At least five years of business experience in increasingly responsible positions in the field of risk management or compliance management which demonstrate the active application of risk management principles. Ability to analyze factors concerning risk, liability, safety, and occupational hazards which lead to effective solutions based upon the human and financial resources available to address the issue. Ability to maintain effective relationships with a wide constituent group of University employees, students, insurance representatives, other universities, public risk officials, and the general public. Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative fashion and to successfully manage conflicts leading to positive outcomes within the resources available. Ability to work independently towards the accomplishment of agreed upon goals for the position. Ability to accumulate a large amount of data, organize the data in a user friendly fashion, provide ready access to this data for those who need access to it, and ensure the data is reviewed/updated as required.
