Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in the Ances Laboratory at Washington University in St. Louis. The primary focus of the lab is to understand how neurodegenerative diseases (especially Alzheimer’s disease) disrupt brain organization and mediates symptoms. Results are expected to have broad implications not only for understanding the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative disorders but more generally for understanding the relationship between brain physiology, anatomy, and behavior. The laboratory utilizes state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) (amyloid, tau, and neuroinflammation) research facilities and has an outstanding record of productivity. Writing manuscripts and applying for independent grants will be strongly encouraged.
The primary responsibility of the postdoctoral fellow will be to conceive, design, and analyze studies pertaining to the effect of neurodegenerative disease on structural (e.g., volumetric imaging and diffusion tensor imaging [DTI]) and functional (e.g., blood oxygen level dependent [BOLD] imaging and arterial spin labeling [ASL]) brain organization. This individual will also have the ability to study new PET imaging using multiple tracers for amyloid, tau, and inflammation. Anticipated activities entail development and implementation of new analytic strategies to facilitate understanding of disease in the human brain, integration of large multi-modal imaging datasets, and analysis of the relationship between brain imaging markers and cognition or clinical status. Strong written communication skills are required. Attention to detail, organizational capability, and the ability to handle multiple concurrent tasks are essential. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to be able to work independently as well as part of a team in a fast paced environment. The appointee trains under the supervision of a faculty member or a department in research. The appointment is not part of a clinical training program.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manages their own project, preparing and submitting papers on research.
Assists with grant preparation and reporting.
Assists in the design of research experiments.
Develops proficiency in their ancillary skills, e.g. writing, public speaking, networking, critical evaluation of scientific documents, etc.
Evaluates research findings and assists in the reporting of scientific work both inside and outside the University.
Provides guidance and mentorship for more junior lab members.
The conscientious discharge of his/her research responsibilities.
Conformity with ethical standards in research.
Compliance with good laboratory practice including the maintenance of adequate research records.
Open and timely discussion with his/her mentor regarding possession or distribution of material, reagents, or records belonging to their laboratory and any proposed disclosure of findings or techniques privately or in publications.
Collegial conduct towards co-trainees, staff members and members of the research group.
Adherence to all applicable University policies, procedures and regulations. All data, research records and materials and other intellectual property generated in University laboratories remain the property of the University.
The appointee has earned a Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent terminal or doctoral degree.
The appointment is of limited duration generally, not to exceed five years cumulatively unless there are extenuating circumstances.
A Ph.D. in neuroscience, computer science, physics, engineering, mathematics, psychology, or related fields is requested.
Previous experience is preferred in computational methods, scientific programming, and/or neuroimaging data analysis.
Experience in computer programming (e.g. Matlab, shell scripting, Python, C), image processing (e.g. custom routines, FSL, AFNI, Freesurfer), and statistical analyses (R, SPSS) is beneficial.
The successful applicant will have a strong background in scientific computing (e.g., Unix/Linux experience).
Academic proficiency in statistics is strongly desired.
The applicant should have experience designing or adopting statistical approaches to address neurobiological questions.
Preference will be given to applicants with a strong publication record or experience with writing grant applications.
The successful candidate should be highly motivated with excellent analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills.
