Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, occasional early morning, evening and weekend hours may be required. As needed, travel may be required to participate in program events/activities.
Salary: Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Under the supervision of the Executive Director, responsible for the overall management of a comprehensive Recreational Sports program including the Student Recreation and Wellness Center, fitness and wellness, intramural sports, informal recreation, group exercise, climbing wall, sport clubs, summer youth programs, Outdoor programs and equipment rental, ropes course and special events. The Director is responsible for promoting student development in and among the diverse students attending California State University, San Bernardino. The Director will operate within a broad wellness model to provide a variety of indoor and outdoor recreational programs. The Director, in collaboration with other members of the campus community, is charged with creating environments where students can renew their physical and mental vigor in support of their overall educational goals. In addition, the Director will provide opportunities where students can learn new skills and gain deeper insights into themselves.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Plans, organizes implements, manages, and evaluates all Recreational Sports programs in accordance with established service standards. Researches and purchases equipment needed for the successful operation of a recreation center. Develops and manages new programs, such as B-well, group exercise, climbing wall, and equipment rental for the Student Recreation Center. Develops and implements cooperative wellness/health education programs with other campus departments. Makes recommendations for departmental goals and objectives.
Prepares, plans, and projects expenditures for an annual balanced budget of over $2,700,000 annually. Monitors budget to ensure that year-end results meet approved budget. Adjusts expenditures and budget to compensate for revenue shortfall or for unforeseen expenditures. Meets budget preparation, re-budget submittal and capital request timelines. Explores new revenue streams to supplement the department's funds. Solicit and secure corporate sponsorships. Reviews all expenditures to make sure that they are within the approved budget and submitted in a timely fashion.
Human Resource Management
Supervises professional staff, support staff employees, and para-professionals. Conducts all hiring and termination in accordance with SMSU policies and proper timelines. Maintains appropriate staffing levels to facilitate satisfactory operation of the areas under supervision. Provides each employee an orientation and introduction to the facility, department, and SMSU, including the specific standards that apply to each area. Directs the work courteously and gives clear, specific and realistic goals. Includes methods of accomplishment and accountability as appropriate. Assesses and monitors each employee's knowledge, understanding, ability, readiness and willingness to perform each assignment, then makes appropriate response. When assigning tasks, provides information, training, materials and support as appropriate. Provides each employee with written information about his or her job responsibilities, procedures and policies. Conducts practical drills and written exams for employees to improve their job knowledge. Holds effective staff meetings frequently and regularly provides information regarding policy changes, special events and all other pertinent topics. Keeps employees informed of daily happening and messages that pertain to their work. Makes corrections positively and promptly and includes specific suggestions for change as soon after the event as possible, considering privacy factors. Corrects individual problems with staff they supervise within six months of first occurrence. Maintains professional membership within the National Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) and other related organizations.
Conducts comprehensive on-site safety inspections of all Recreational Sports facilities and programs on a regular basis. Provides indirect oversight to maintenance and custodial staff to ensure that all areas are clean, in good repair, and in compliance with respective safety codes. Provides employees with safety training and conducts regular safety meetings. Maintains attendance records of safety meetings. Develops and maintains safety audit program for all programs. Implements an Injury and Illness Prevention plan (IIPP). Conducts monthly mock emergencies to practice established emergency action procedures. Reviews and maintains participant accident reports, employee injury reports, incident reports, supervisor's logs and safety suggestions of staff and participants. Analyzes recurring accidents, trends or unusual situations and identifies probable causes of each accident and effects change. Ensures all recreation staff meet minimum qualifications and standards required within job description. Maintains master list of certifications for personnel; schedules training clinics in C.P.R. and emergency first aid training for personnel. Ensures written liability and release/waiver information outlining pertinent safety standards is provided to customers prior to participation by front-line staff and completed by each participant. Posts appropriate participant safety, liability, and warning signage. Compiles a comprehensive list of all accidents and emergencies that are likely to occur in the Recreational and Wellness programs and establishes emergency action plans for actual occurrence of each event. Reviews and keeps up-to-date on recommended safety levels and standards arising from recent court decisions;
Facility and Equipment Management
In coordination with maintenance staff and CSUSB Facility Services, plans, designs, budgets, and ensures completion of preventative maintenance programs. Conducts regular facility walk-throughs to ensure that proper maintenance and custodial of the Student Recreation Center facility is being performed in a proper and timely manner. Provides direction to maintenance and custodial staff. Completes or ensures completion of all needed work orders or repair reports are prepared and submitted to maintenance staff or CSUSB Facility Services. Monitors the progress of work as required and ensures high priority on safety items by all staff. Inspects all recreation facilities to ensure that they are cleaned in accordance with established standards. Purchases, maintains, ensures proper repairs, stores, and conducts inventory of purchased equipment in accordance to appropriate standards. Supervises Assistant Directors to ensure that equipment is suitable to meet the needs of participants regardless of skill level. Maintains long-range (20 & 30-year) equipment and facility repair & replacement schedules. Plans for reserve funds to pay for the replacement and repair costs of these items.
Prepares and maintains a master facility calendar for all internal recreation programs (special events, staff meetings, informal recreation, sport clubs practices and competitions, fitness, intramural sports, non-credit classes) and external events (classes, Athletic Department practices and contests, campus special events, and others) with no facility scheduling overlaps. Publishes and distributes scheduling information regularly. Coordinates the indoor and outdoor facilities for all recreation programs in accordance with approved policies. Provides guidelines that maintain proper event approval procedures. Develops and maintains a positive working relationship with internal programs (Recreational Sports, Student Union, Coussoulis Arena, Office of Student Engagement, and the Associated Students) and external (Department of Athletics, Facility Services, Kinesiology Department and Event Scheduling), and all prospective recreation facility and equipment users. Creates and implements programming changes to enhance the utilization of the Student Recreation Center. Develops Recreational Sports policies & procedures and presents them to the Recreation Board for approval. Ensures that all policies are interpreted, understood, and applied properly by all Recreational Sports staff. Efficiently operates the Student Recreation Center facility according to energy standards.
Boards and Councils
Provides leadership and reports to the Santos Manuel Student Union Board of Directors and the Student Recreation and Wellness Committee, Obtains adequate staff and member coverage for Recreation and Wellness Committee meetings. Provides orientation to Recreation and Wellness committee members regarding board functions. Prepares agenda and minutes in a timely and accurate manner. Establishes and maintains effective communication and working relationships with committee members. Presents credible, accurate information, together with professional advice, preparation of research, reports and other appropriate information as needed. Provides timely review of matters to be brought before the SMSU Board. Successfully demonstrates an understanding of and commitment to mutual respect and appropriate roles of collegiality between students and staff within the context of a student leadership program. Maintains objectivity in all interactions with students, without personal bias or preference, to ensure all staff recommendations and advice contribute to student decision-making which is free of undue influence and considers all pertinent information as well as any viable alternatives.
Defines target markets. Completes program assessment, research and surveys regarding needs. Develops and implements a comprehensive promotional campaign to disseminate program information.
University and Community Liaison
Active member of the Santos Manuel Student Union leadership team. Serve on campus-wide committees as directed by the SMSU Executive Director. Meets periodically with the staffs of University departments (Athletics, Facility Services, Kinesiology, Office of Student Engagement, Planning, Event Scheduling, Housing & Residential Life, Associated Students, and the Alumni Association) and community organizations (Parks and Recreation) to communicate schedules, plan events, and avoid potential problems. Be the departmental spokesperson and liaison to the campus and the surrounding community.
Provides customer services training to full-time staff. Ensures, through each full-time staff member, that all staff in the department meets customer service guidelines. Provides unique programs and incentives to encourage outstanding customer service. Mediate conflicts that may occur within the Recreational Sports program.
Meets all administrative deadlines and follows the proper procedures. Completes scheduled routine tasks and reports such as: develops master facility calendar, payment of invoices, review payroll reports and personnel schedules; review all budget and personnel reports, completes user statistics and income analysis, reviews budget activity reports, program assessments and adjustments, develops goals, submits annual budget by announced deadline, completes special projects as requested, prepares employee evaluations, reviews and updates employee handbooks and training manuals.
Bachelor's Degree (Master's Degree Preferred) in Recreation Administration, Business Administration, and Higher Education or closely required.
Five or more years of progressively responsible experience managing a comprehensive recreation department.
Two or more years of experience overseeing recreation within a wellness model required.
Experience in program development, supervision and evaluate budgeting.
Strategic planning/visioning aptitude and the ability to direct existing, comprehensive recreation and wellness program and the ability to develop new ones on his/her own initiative effectively.
Possess excellent professional relationship building/networking
Demonstrate excellent communication (oral and written) skills and possess strong leadership skills.
Experience building profession demonstrated commitment to developing student and professional staff members.
Expert knowledge of national trends and follow and practices of the National Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA).
Track record of ability to meet goals, hold staff accountable engagement at all levels to achieve optimal performance.
